Resolve vertically, taking one direction as positive. The vertical velocity would be 7sin30, acceleration -9.8 and displacement -12.6

ive just been looking back on some of my questions and ive got it now, but what i dnt get is whyve u've said a=-9.8 bcos for all of my question ive treated a(vertically) as +ve and have always got the right answer.

If you took the acceleration as +9.8 then any velocity upwards would be negative. As long as the different directions have opposite signs it doesn't matter.

From start position to max. height:

u = 7sin30, v = 0, a = -9.8, Initial height = 12.6 m.

v = u + at

---> 0 = 7sin30 - 9.8t

---> 9.8t = 7sin30

---> t = 0.357 s

Max.h = ut + 1/2at^2 + 12.6

Max.h = (7sin30)(0.357) -(4.9)(0.357)^2 + 12.6

Max.h = 13.225m

From max.h to ground:

s = 13.225m, u = 0, a = 9.8

s = ut + 1/2at^2

---> 13.225 = 1/2(9.8)t^2

---> 13.225 = 4.9t^2

---> t^2 = 2.699

---> t = 1.643 s

---> Time Elapsed = 0.357 + 1.643

= 2 s
