May would definitely be too late. When I did GCSEs, (I'm year 13 now) i started in the Easter Holidays, and I even then was a little rushed for time. I would say starting in march, april time would set you in good stead. Too early or too late are both equally bad, as you drain yourself too quickly or are too rushed and have to cram everything.
