When I get my essays back for university, it says mark 63, or mark 59 for example. What does this usually mean? Does it mean 63 percent?

Yes that's what it means. A common misconception about people first getting uni marks back is that if you get a 60% for example, it means you only got 60% right. This isn't how uni works. Percentages don't really mean that, it's more about the number itself.

70+ = first
60-69 = 2:1
50-59 = 2:2
40-49 = third

A 2:1 is what most people aim to achieve (a first is like getting an A* so only a few people get them if they work really hard) so those are pretty good marks for a university level assignment, well done!
