Volunteer Work In Personal Statement?

Hello Guy's & Gal's,

I'm a bit confused over what voluntary experiences to put in my UCAS personal statement when I start term this September can someone help? I understand that I only have a limited amount of lines and want to make sure that I balance everything out.

Basically I've done voluntary work for various differant organisations such as being a Poppy girl for the British Legion, Climbing up the biggest mountain in South Wales for veterans of the Falklands War, serving beverages and refreshments in Cardiff prison and next month I'm doing a tandem skydive. JUMPING 10 THOUSAND FEET OUT OF AN AEROPLANE:woo: For a charity called Help for Heroes. An giving 1000 pounds away in order to errect a monument in Cardiff Central dedicated to people who died in the Falklands war.

I just want some advice on what voluntary postions should I put in my personal statement? As i'm not going to be able to fit all of them in and talk about the skills I've learnt etc whilst also fitting everything else in my personal statement

Hope anyone can help

.X.

You could say that you're heavily invlved in voluntary work and list the organisations- then if space give more details of the ones that mean most to you/ you'd be happiest talking about at interview

If you like, I could post my personal statement here. Am I allowed to do that or should I PM you it? I put loads of volunteer work into my personal statement but I made sure what work I did do could reference to my course and why it was a benefit. Be a benefit for my course or my personal development. Perhaps it'll give you some idea how to lay it out.

Aww that would be great

Can't thank you enough!

Will be great to see how someone else layed their volutary section out as the ones I have looked at do not include many voluntary placements.

Many Thanks

I'd say include the sky diving and mountain trek as it sounds pretty interesting and sporty aswell as being charity work.

Remember the PS helping section of the website!

Also, make sure whatever you mention is relevant. What unis are you applying to? (I assume it's for history)

Yup I want to do a joint History and American Studies degree my first choice is going to be Swansea:smile:

So what ones do you think are most relevant for History/American studies out of the ones I have done already?

Swansea would have been my 2nd choice but my first choice was unconditional.
It's a lovely university and lovely town.
A bit sad about not going there in a lot of ways.

Your extra curricular stuff doesn't necessarily have to be linked to the course, it can be used to demonstrate you have the skills required for the course, for example: time keeping blahdiblah. However, imo, this shouldn't form a large part of your statement. As such I just mention you do volunteer work and the skills/abilities this demonstrates. I wouldn't actually say what your volunteering involves beyond that.

Awww your not happy with what university you are at know are you?
By the way what university are you actually in know?
I agree even though Swansea is much smaller and quieter than Cardiff is seems a very nice close knit community

Swansea was by the coast and it would have been lovely in the Summer. I am going to Hull, which seem a bit of dump to be honest. But the course is very good and end of the day, according to the Times, the sixth best place to do my course.

Mother would have brought me a house if I went to Swansea but no worry, I can still used the one in Hull instead when I move up in September.

Hope you have a fantastic time in Swansea.

I agree like I said I understand my personal statement needs to show my academic ability and also my personal and charachteristic ability to do well on the course to:smile:

I just want to make sure it is well balanced.

So you think I should say the voluntary placement I adopted and the the skills I have learnt or knowledge gained from them.
