They were an American trio active during the early-mid 1980s, who are commonly regarded as one of the most influential rock groups of the last 40 years, being a major influence on the likes of Nirvana, Green Day, Foo Fighters and a handful of British groups from the 90s and 2000s such as Ash. Their last album, Warehouse: Songs and Stories (recorded in 1986) is one of the few albums that I can recite throughout, and maintains a similar level of song quality throughout its 20 tracks. They also released 7 albums in the space of barely 4 years (counting their EP Metal Circus), two of them double ones, which is something you're unlikely to see today.

Their last 3 albums are by far the most approachable to a newcomer when it comes to songwriting and production, as they began as a hardcore punk band before evolving into melodic alternative rock.

Some of their best songs in my opinion (newer stuff nearer the top, which I'd suggest you listen to first if you're unfamiliar with them) would be:

*She's A Woman (And Now He Is a Man) (1987)
*Ice Cold Ice (1987)
*She Floated Away (1987)
*Don't Want To Know If You Are Lonely (1986)
*Games (1985)
*Keep Hanging On (1985)
*Makes No Sense At All (1985)
*Celebrated Summer (1985)
*Books About UFOs (from what I've read this is allegedly what influenced Dave Grohl to call his band Foo Fighters) (1985)
*Pink Turns To Blue (1984)
*Turn On The News (1984)
*It's Not Funny Anymore (1983)
*Diane (1983)
*In A Free Land (1981)

Their co-lead singer and guitarist Bob Mould later formed the band Sugar in the early 90s, who had a couple of minor hits in the UK. They essentially sounded like the later Husker Du but with better production.
