So just done a 5000 word essay and at my uni they take away 5% if you go over the word count.

My essay is 4910 including footnotes. But turnitin adds like 70 words for no reason. (I’ve counted the title and also my student Id at the top of each page and that’s only like 20 words extra).

It’s weird how the system manages to ignore bibliography but then adds 70?

So it has me at 4989 words which is close. I’m mainly just curious as to how the system works

Not sure, but this is really common. We have in our submission rules that we go off the Turnitin wordcount and that students should check. Strange thing.
