The Student Room Group

In debenhams today..

I fainted :frown:

I was standing up in a queue, just had lunch..drank some water like 10mins before and was chatting, when suddenly the room started spinning and i just WENT.

Not only did i feel VERY embaressed but also confused as too why this happened, i wasn't pregnant, low blood sugar, dehydrated, hungover...tired..i was feeling absolouely fine and it came out of the blue.

Does anyone else get this?? i felt really shaky when i came too, and panic-attacky, which i used too suffer from.and i guess, this was because of the shock of what happened..

what could it be, should i see someone..or is it one of those things that just happens now and again??

Probably one of those things that just happens now and again. If it happens a few more times in the next month then i'd suggest going to see someone.

was it hot in there as i know my boyfriend got really hot and randomly had a nose bleed and the debenhams near us tends to be really hot.

That might have been reason why you fainted.

I would go see a GP still and get some blood tests and ECG scan done.

Is this as if to say, if you were pregnant, you're not now? lol

Either way, I might go to the GP, just to see if you're alreet.
Had you been standing up for a long time? That can make people go.
I used to get this loads when I was younger, fainted in an interesting array of places, including an ice rink! You probably just overheated, but I wouldn't worry unless you keep fainting all the time!

Are you going through the menopause?

See a doctor if you're worried but they probably won't do anything because it was only one time. Hell my best friend used to faint if he even ran up some stairs and the doctor didn't care.

No, I means to say she wasn't pregnant when this happened.

I wouldn't say it's normal, but I have almost fainted several times during sex education. Not something I like to but what the hay, it's only the internet and who uses that these days? Anyway it's not even the sex part as it's not as if I feel uncomfortable, I just stop breathing, literally, without realising and then everything becomes dark, like regular patterned spots of black becoming darker, then an intense ringing in the ears which drowns out all other noise, sweating, extremely weak muscles, complete loss of balance, heavy eye lids, and one time I was sick. I've never actually fainted but I'm pretty sure I've been close a few times. I don't know if this helps as I know what sets me off, kind of, but yeah, you're not the only one.

I had exaaactly the same thing the other day at school; I know what you mean about it suddenly coming completely out the blue! My school convinced me to go to the hospital because I've had some problems with headaches etc. but generally I think they're okay to leave for the moment and see if the same happens again, unless you hit your head when you fell or have any other symptoms now. Are you on your period right now, or is it due quite soon? The doctor at A&E and one of my teachers said fainting can be quite common at certain points in the menstrual cycle, even if you don't have a history of it.

Hope you feel better soon, try not to worry too much about it! :hugs:

That happened to me once whilst I was in a lesson. Just like yourself, i wasnt pregnant, dehydrated or anything for that matter. I was sat watching a DVD with the class and then all of a sudden i started feeling increasingly hot but with a cold sweat (all this happening within the space of minutes)...I got up to go to the next classroom which was empty and i couldnt hold myself up...a few metres down I collapsed but then a teacher helped me back up and took me to the classroom where i threw up...Lol. After that I was totally fine. To this day i dont know what came over me.....it was all so sudden and quick. :s-smilie: :s-smilie: :s-smilie:
I have a thing called postural hypotension, my blood pressure changes rapidly when I stand up from when Ive been sitting down. But my blood pressure goes lower instead of higher causing me to feel dizzy most times I stand up, even if its not particularily quickly. Maybe it could be this?
Something like this happened to me in a bar a couple of months ago. I was standing at the bar waiting to be served when I started to feel really drunk and out of it but I'd only had a glass of wine. Luckily my boyfriend realised something was amiss and took me outside where I fainted, rather than at the bar itself. Still people must have thought I'd gotten myself into a right state with the drinking by 7pm! OP, I was really worried my drink had been spiked or something, or there was something seriously wrong with me, but I've been fine ever since. Just keep an eye on it and make sure you eat and drink enough, especially when it's hot. If it starts happening on a regular basis, go and see your GP.
One of my friends started having random bouts of fainting. She would faint about three times a week and she found out after going to the doctor that it was due to heavy periods

I suppose her body's natural balance just knocked out and due to lack of iron etc. she started fainting. She felt fine before and after a couple of minutes afterwards.

Not sure if this applies to you but it does happen. I hope everything goes ok for you!

For god's sake NEVER give blood!

why?? Im actually giving blood tomorrow...:s-smilie:

like scarlett was going to suggest postural hypotension though it may not be serious in you case if u have it. fainting happens for many reasons, most people faint now and again. though i have only done so once in spain because i was dehydrated i very often get spells of dizziness on and off, often i'll have a week every few months where i feel constantly like i'm going to faint. my symptons include a tingly jaw and arms (especially the hands) and general shortness of breath. my doctor has suggested that it is caused by stress. have you been stressed recently?

also, how is your diet. although you may have eaten a lot i wonder if you're getting enough vitamins. when i was young i used to feel dizzy a lot until i started taking multivitamins and after a week i was fine. i still take them.

whatever the cause, dont worry about it but a professional opinion from your gp should set your mind to rest
