A brief overview: USSR was the name of modern-day Russia whilst it was led by the Bolsheviks, a communist party. However, the country could not sustain being communist so collapsed putting an end to that government. The first communist revolution carried out by Lenin was in 1917 to from the USSR or Soviet Union. So the USSR is usually seen as a symbol of communism.

Noting that the Soviet Union - or Union of Soviet Socialist Republics encompassed much more than just modern day Russia. Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Ukraine, Georgia, Belarus etc etc all became independent countries.
