So in my first 2 essays that I have written at university I used “ instead of ‘ when writing my quotes , a website told me that I had done it correctly but will this mark me down despite me still referencing correctly if my punctuation for quoting is incorrect?

I highly doubt it.

Won't be marked down (or at least not by much) but you will be pulled on it

It is the convention in the UK (at least in the humanities) to use single quotation marks and only use doubles for a quote within a quote. You ought to listen to the university on this and not a website
