Dorothy Perkins Store Card

After months of being pestered by them everytime I go into DP to buy stuff, I agreed to sign up to one of their store cards, assuming it would work like a Boots card type thing where you just get points and things.

But now I've got a letter through with my card, and it's going on about statements and things. I don't understand though - am I being charged just to have the card? Cos I don't shop there *that often* - usually every couple of months really.

Can someone explain how the card works and whether it's actually worthwhile having one?

Thanks

It's like a credit card thing, not just a points card. You spend money on it and they send you a bill for it.
29.9% APR!!! They've buttered you up like a kipper, you want to get that cancelled if you can.

That's what I would do.

It's not a points thing at all, it's like a credit card. You get charged just for having the card. I opened an account about a month ago and I've just closed it. I'd advise you to do the same. It's a scam.

That's what it sounded like to me. It doesn't seem right that they can charge you, without telling you while they're setting it up.

How did you close it? Was it a lot of hard work, or relatively easy to do?

Thanks

I guess you could call them, there should be a number on the letter. Or try your local store. It seems like they dress these store cards up all sweetly, offering discounts and free stuff, then BAM! They hit you with the bill, which is prob more than you would have paid anyway. My friend worked at New Look and she never offered the store card, she felt bad for people who wanted it!

Get rid of it now, store cards destroy you with the high interest rates. Stick with a Boots or Tesco points card.
Cancel it, cancel it, cancel it.

Burn it, get rid of it as quickly as you can.

It's the financial devil incarnate.
This happened to 2 of my friends.
It's not a points card.
It allows you to 'buy before you pay' kind ofthing...then charges you ridiculously large rates of interest.
Cancel it ASAP

As someone who used to work for Dotty P's and had a store card, id advise you to cancel it.
I hated asking people if they wanted one, but we HAD to :frown:
I had one, its like a credit card. Cancelled it when i stopped working there. I just phoned up and said i wanted to cancel it - although i did feel presurised to keep it, they guy was like 'why...' 'you should keep it... it wont cost you anything to leave the account open' etc... and i just stuck to my guns. Account is closed, no more worrying about balances for me

Unfortunately I was persuaded to get one of these cards a couple of weeks ago. The shop assistant didn't explain the card to me clearly and I really regret having it (the assistant was nice when she was getting me to sign up to the card but when I went back to pay it and wanted to return some stuff she was rather rude :frown: ). I want to cancel it but haven't so far cos I have a £3 credit on there which I can spend, which is not alot but I can always get a little bracelet or something with it.

But I wasn't aware that you get charged just for having the card!? Really?

Still, a lesson learnt.
Get rid of it ASAP. It's more like a credit card than a Boots points card.

They have a customer service number which should come with all the information so I phoned up and said I wanted it cancelled. They asked for some information from me and said they'd cancel it. It was less trouble than I expected.

Seriously store cards aren't that bad

Pay them off, no interest, they'll send you lots of offers in the post. My mum gets 20% offers regularly, I hardly ever buy full price in DP!

And they are fairly easy to get, so spending and clearing them improves your credit history!
debehams card is simialr

Make sure you look up 'Credit Rating' on Google (unless you already know what that is). If you don't pay money that you owe on the card by the due date it will affect your credit rating and in this day and age you REALLY don't want to do that.

I think it's ridiculous that as a staff member you have to have one or you can't get your discount!

(At least that's how it works at evans, and they're the same company)

my girlfriend got one of these not long ago, i new it was a bad thing told her to cancel it but it turns out as long as you pay back the money on it within 3 months of purchasing the item you dont get charged interest so i supose its not too bad if you know when your getting the money to pay it off

Possibly a daft question, but how do you pay the money back? The stuff that came with the card doesn't explain that. Will it just get taken automatically out of my account?
