After explaining and describing the different ways of profiling, you'd then need to criticially evaluate, which is where discussing the validity and reliability of the methods would be appropriate. We had a guy who worked as a Behavioural Investigative Advisor for the National Crime Agency come in and do a guest lecture, he's someone the police contact if a serious crime occurs (i.e rape, murder) and there's no obvious evidence or indication of who may have committed the offence. He asses crime scenes, generates hypotheses, links cases and uses matrices to discount potential known suspects. It's probably the closest thing we have in the UK to the traditional profiling you see in the FBI so may be worth a Google.
