Manchester Colleges

Hello,

I live in Manchester and am currently deciding on colleges I’ve applied for Aquinas, Xaverian and Loreto. I’ve got an interview for Aquinas and have gotten into Loreto.

I was honestly so shocked when I got into loreto because I thought it was really hard to get into because I see Loreto as a really prestigious college in terms of grades. There’s where my problem is, I applied to Loreto not expecting I’d get in and I didn’t really like the feel of the college either but I just knew it was really hard to get into and they get good results and the staff seemed nice.

For a period I wanted to go to Aquinas then Loreto after their presentation and then I saw the actual college and the feel of it wasn’t very nice and I didn’t really feel safe in the surroundings and then we went to xaverians open day and I really liked the college and it’s easier to get to. But after time I’ve warmed to the idea of going to Aquinas as it’s really easy to get to and a lot of my friends are going there.

Now that I’ve got into Loreto I feel an immense pressure not to pass on that opportunity, could anyone shed any insight into these colleges?

Hi! Which college did you end up choosing? And how was your experience there? If you don't mind me asking. I'm currently in the same predicament, wondering whether I should go to Loreto.
Hey
I chose Loreto over Xaverian and just finished y12. Honestly your experience is up to you to make. In the first couple of weeks the crowd can seem overwhelming (Loreto has about 1000 more students than Xaverian) but soon everyone finds their pockets of space. We’ve not got as much choice for lunch as Xaverian, they’ve got the whole curry mile, we’ve got an Asda, kfc, McDonald’s and b&m 🥴 but we do have 2 cafeterias and vending machines.

In terms of study, Loreto has high expectations but they’ll still give you the support you need, then it’s left for you to be proactive. Studying is common at Loreto at any point in the year and not just exam season. We’ve got 3 study centres and a library. If you study bit by bit every day then you don’t need to stress and cram when exams come. If you get a grade you’re not happy with and you ask your teacher what to improve on, you’ll be taken seriously and offered help. They’ve also got online resources to help you plan your revision especially when you feel you’ve fallen behind (that’s was quite helpful for me tbh)

Speaking of exams, we have them slightly before Xaverian. Our first official year 12 mocks are in March (that generally stays the same each year from what I heard). Then you’ll have slightly less formal exams in May and those exams + every other small test you’ve done & your effort in class will be used to determine your predicted grades at the end of y12. I’m pretty sure Xaverian have their official y12 mocks around May.

In terms of making friends, there’ll be people who came from their high schools as a friendship group and there’ll be some who are the only ones from their school, so talking to people you sit next to in form, or you subject classes is a good start. Also they got loads of clubs you can join where you’ll hopefully find people with matching interests. From sports to book club & anime society. There’s quite a range to choose from.

Oh yeah, one thing about Loreto is that most of your lessons will be in doubles. I don’t think Xaverian does this but it may have changed. For example period 1&2 are in a double block so unless you have RE (one compulsory lesson a week where you don’t get tested) then it’ll be a double. Eg double biology. They’re 1h15 mins long each with a 15 break in between. But the length of lessons get shorter as the day goes by. P1&2 are 1h15, p3 is 1h05 and p4&5 are 1h each with a 10 min break in between

Random fact, Loreto broke up for summer about 2 weeks before most schools, including Xaverian. We’ve been off since the 5th of July so if that is of any use to you, there you go

Anyways that was super long but I’m still happy to answer any more questions you have

I chose Xaverian over Loreto mainly because it was just easier to get to, I didn't get the chance to attend any open days so it was 50/50.Most of my lessons are doubles, with the similar structure of a 2hr 30 lesson, P1 is 1 hour, then a 15 min break, then P2 is 1 hr 15. I have some 1hr lessons only too inbetween doubles.I had official y12 AS exams in May and I wish I had done something like Loreto with mocks in March first. We have some exams in September to boost predicted grades though.

Hey what was it do you think that got you into loreto?
Hi. I’m going to be doing my GCSEs this year and going to be applying for colleges. I’m really considering Xaverian and Loreto. Still need to think about the distance but these 2 are the top preferences. After that it’s going to be sixth forms in grammar schools.

What are the minimum grades needed to get into these colleges?

depends on the course. If ur not doing stem then ur grade 9-4 will be okay. Generally for maths, sciences and english they require a 6/7+
