Why is it -Vp in part (a)?
Also can someone explain me the steps here. i have my exams on monday and need help :/

The impulse acts towards the left and and the positive direction is taken as right to left (indicated by the arrrow to the left, on the first line of the answer).

Therefore as velocity  v_{p} is directed to the right, this is perceived as the negative direction.
