Whenever I have the smiths on my mp3 player I get funny looks, after seemingly randomly smiling and grinning every so often at the lyrics. I love that they make me do that <3

The Smiths for me, though am not really well acquainted with JD lyrics (depsite having numerous records and EPs). Morrissey is absolute legend.

but are they really comparable though? i think theyre very different but meh each to his own right.

The Smiths, of course. This oughtn't to be a question. I would like this thread deleted and replaced with one entitled "The Smiths Have The Best Lyrics".
The Smiths, without a doubt.
All of Morrissey's lyrics tend to hold the same quality, which is good. Ian Curtis, on the other hand, was good, but not as spectacular as people make out. If we're just going to stick to lyrics, then The Smiths win hands down. All I need to get me through the day is Reel Around the Fountain.

Musically, it's more complex, since you have to place Johnny Marr against Hookie and Sumner. But, that's another topic for another thread...

:ditto:

Morrissey is the greatest lyricist of all time.

"Hair brushed and parted, typical me, typical me, typical me, I started something.. and now I'm not too sure.."
Joy Division for me, with the Smiths coming close behind.
I adore The Smiths, not so much Joy Division. Heaven knows I'm miserable now is a great song if you're looking at lyrics.

I just don't think you can compare the two, really. Both Curtis and Morrissey were/are fantastic lyricists and both evoke such different emotions.

I was just listening to the Smiths on my way to Durham today, then Joy Division (and the Velvet Underground) on the way back  I can't decide....
I much prefer The Smiths musically and lyrically. My only complaint is that Meat Is Murder is far too overtly preachy.
And if a double-decker bus
Crashes into us
To die by your side
Is such a heavenly way to die
And if a ten-ton truck
Kills the both of us
To die by your side
Well, the pleasure - the privilege is mine.

There's no beating this.

The Smiths, by far.
'Now I know how Joan of Arc felt/When the flames rose to her roman nose/And her walkman started to melt'
Genius.
they both have different styles of writing and j.d seems more pared down and distant to match the mood

swayed by the smiths though
"A heartless hand on my shoulder
A push - and it's over
Alabaster crashes down
(Six months is a long time)
Tried living in the real world
Instead of a shell
But before I began ...
I was bored before I even began"

The Smiths have better lyrics but I like them both equally overall.
You can't not love Joy Division.

Exactly the example I was going to give.

The Smiths, Joy division have some gorgeous songs, but for me nothing by joy division will ever beat

"The rain falls hard on a humdrum town
This town has dragged you down/

William, William it was really nothing
It was your life ...

How can you stay with a fat girl who'll say :
"Oh ! Would you like to marry me ?
"And if you like you can buy the ring"
She doesn't care about anything
Would you like to marry me ?
And if you like you can buy the ring
I don't dream about anyone - except myself"

I mean if we're talking about desert island top 5 all time favourite lyrics thats my second, they're funny, bitter and pure Brilliance.
recently got into them both, atm i qould say the smiths where better, but i may just have got their better songs and not the great ones for joy division, could anyone reckon say the best five for each band please? obv its subjective but in your opinion so i can download them? Please quote this message in your reply so i pick it up.

thanks
the smiths hands down
morrissey is a god.... bigger than god!

'panic on the streets of carlisle' (yay where i live!)

and

'Shyness is nice, and
Shyness can stop you
From doing all the things in life
You'd like to

Shyness is nice, and
Shyness can stop you
From doing all the things in life
You'd like to

So, if there's something you'd like to try
If there's something you'd like to try
ask me, i wont say no, how could i ?'
I love both of those bands, and I adore the show Dexter... hmmm :ninja: :p:

Hard to decide... but I'd have to go with the smiths. :yep:
