Need To Lose 5 Stones! HELP!

Okay...so I was reading another thread about weight loss so I decided to check out my own BMI. I knew I was overweight but my BMI says I'm obese! I need to lose 5 stones to be down to a healthy weight...

I'm not going to join weight watchers or anything like that because I've been before and found them to be a waste of time and money!

I know I need to drastically change my diet - cutting out most of the unhealthy things and replacing them with healthy foods that I like. I also know I need to start doing some exercise again.

What I want from you guys is any extra tips you have?

Well, three questions.

How tall are you?
How much do you weigh?
What is your BMI?
Five stone is an awful lot of weight to lose, even if you're very overweight. You have to realise that this must be a long term goal.

This thread should be in the Fitness forum, though, and there are many, many resources there explaining how to lose weight. The basis of it all is you need to burn more calories than you eat, and eat well.

Erm...I don't really want to disclose that =P

I worked out my BMI on an online calculator on two different sites (praying the first one was wrong!) and it is 36...

EEK!!!

When you're talking about losing 5 stone, it's not the time to be withholding the information. Besides which, it's an internet forum, nobody is going to judge you.
As somebody else posted, 5 Stone must be lost over a long period of time, not in the period of two or so weeks. And be pretty sure that it's absolutely neccesary for you to lose it. But I'm sure the fitness forum people could offer you a lot more advice than I can.

Well, you say you know that you're overweight, so how is it so much of a surprise that you're 'obese'? Yes, I know they're two different things, but all I can say is cut down on eating unhealthy food, and in between meals and maybe eat smaller portions.

If you can, go outside for a jog/walk/trampoline regularly and you should lose some weight, although 5 stones is a lot to lose. I suggest you set smaller targets at first and work your way gradually. DON'T do anything drastic, it's not good for you.

Well I weigh 17 stone.

I'm 5ft8

I was about 15 stone until about six months ago...

If I can lose around 2 and a half stones I'll be in the "overweight" section of the BMI chart

Weight Watchers meetings are rubbish. They were horrible to me and told me I didn't weigh enough ()

However, if you fancy a structured eating scheme (at least at first, to kick start things) then their diet plan is fantastic. It takes saturated fat and calories into account, and everything is allocated a points value which is so much easier to work with than straight up calories. You can also earn extra 'points' for exercise and such.

How did you manage to put on two stones in six months?

Was your weight consistently 15 stones before? Or did it fluctuate up and down. If there was a period when you were losing weight, maybe try that routine again?
Yeah...I know how Weight Watchers works =P

I've been before!

I'm just looking for some extra tips here...like...good foods to eat when trying to lose weight and the best kind of exercise to do?
O_RLY?

I used to be heavier...maybe even almost 19 stone...

But I lost lots of weight about 18 months ago by just not eating...I maybe had a pack of supernoodles every day but that was about it. I did loads of trampolining too...but I was really weird - not talking to my friends properly and stuff - they got pretty worried!

I just put it on from starting to eat lots of rubbish again but in the last few weeks I've been trying to cut down now that I don't have the regular macdonalds lunches with the girls.
Watch Peter Kay. He knows a woman that lost 14 stone in a day. 14 stone in a DAY!
Do fitness dvds, walking, swimming and running if possible. Stick to natural foods. Only eat essential processed foods like bread, pasta and dairy. Dont eat for fun! Eat when you feel hungry or at regular set times. Its better to eat 5 smaller portions a day than 3 bigger ones. If you do lots of exercise to begin with you should drop a few stone easily and quickly. After that you'll lose less more slowly but you should be able to get down to a healthy weight like 10.5 stone at some point. Good Luck

cut down on portion sizes, stop eating foods full of fat (like fried stuff, chips, curries etc.. opt for oven food).

begin eating salads and fruits, when you're hungry don't go for a packet of crisps or biscuits, eat a fruit or 2.. you'll be surprised how much they fill you up.

drink plenty of water! most people think that they're hungry when they could just be thirsty, so again when you're hungry and feel like nibbling, have some water or juice.

stop treating yourself to deserts, especially massive slices of cakes of helpings of ice cream - you'll have to say bye bye to ben & jerry's if you're a fan i'm afriad!

errrrm yeah, you'll be surprised how much you still have to eat you, boilled veggies, jacket potatoes, pasta bakes, stir fry, fish, meat chicken etc.. just cook them appropriately, don't fry!

and exerciseeeeeee, daily start of slowly and then increase your pace gradually.

good luck

hi,
Here are a few tips that help me lose weight, drink water instead of any other drink, dont eat after 8 pm, and also eating every 2hrs to keep ur metabolism high eating say..almonds, fruit,go-ahead biscuits, carrrots etc.And the most important advice i can give u is (took me a while to fathom this out btw lol) if u really really crave something like chocolate dont hold back for days on end because wen u do give in you eat tonnes and then feel bad about urself, instead, have just a few squares of chocolate wen u want it to feed the craving and then stop..
hope some of this was helpful, good luck!
x:biggrin:
ps-and take the occasional walk round the block.
i lost 5 stone over the last two years.

it really isn't easy, but it's worth it. My advice to anyone trying to loose weight is "get happy". It sounds weird but unless you are in a positive state of mind and are in control of your life every diet you try will fail.
Talk to friends about it or if you find it hard to trust them talk to a ccomplete stranger, just get everything off your chest and you will start to feel so much better.

good luck
PM me if you need any help........i've been there remember
well done for taking the first step by admitting you need to lose weight and taking the positive steps for asking for advice. Try to keep things simple and break your weight loss down to half stone goals. Keeping a food diary really does help, if you write down every single morsel you eat, it really makes you think twice about nibbling between meals. If you tend to binge on foods like cheese, buy a low fat block, cut it into 8 and individually wrap each piece, even freeze them and just take 1 out daily. Use very low fat soft cheese spread intstead of butter. with a knife, score lines down the cheese to make 6 segments, then just use 1 per sarnie. calorie counting really does work, although some people find this tedious! You could stick to 1500-1600 cals for your first 2 stone, then go down to 1450 cals for next 2 stone and end with 1200 -1250 for your last stone, as you need to adjust your calories to fit in with your metabolism, which changes as you weigh less. As for exercise, that depends on how much you take now? if you live a sedentary lifestyle, you could start with 20-30 mins of walking. Buy a pedometer and set small goals for yourself, keep track in your food diary of all the extra steps/time walking you do, this way you can see the progress you make.

If you would prefer to do the dieting, without the scales, on the day you begin your healthy living plan, measure youself all over and keep note in your indispensible food diary! Then every week or two, take your measurements again and write them down.

I find letting myself have 200 'i can have anything' calories really important, as this way i do not feel i am being to harsh on myself. Also, a once a week treat of your favourite food, just in a smaller portion could help keep you on the straight and narrow.

Best of luck to you. It really will be worth it in the end.xx
Thanks for the advice guys! =]

I didn't realise I was so huge...I mean...I'm a size 16/18 and am 5ft8...so I knew I was on the chubby side but I've seen people who look much worse...

Get an exercise buddy or something? You need someone to talk to it about, to keep you constantly motivated..I find whenever I'm exercising and if I talk to my friends about it I get the usual 'that's too much, you're fine the way you are' crap which you don't want to hear if you're trying to look better.
