Random stomach pain

I noticed this yesterday, and I think I may have had it before about a week ago - I get a random pain in my stomach/chest, just at the point where my chest meets my stomach. I'm usually fine when I'm sitting down, but standing up brings it on. Also, if I breathe in or out deeply, I can feel the pain. It's difficult to describe it - it's not agonising, but not comfortable either.

I've tried rennies in case it's trapped wind - I took one last night, and woke up with the pain again. Plus, this wouldn't go on for ages, would it?

I've also been doing press ups recently - could it just be a pulled muscle?

Anyone experienced something similar?

I had something similar to this. Couldn't breathe easily and my stomach really hurt. Went to my GP and he said my stomach was swollen and was producing too much acid which was causing the pain and as my stomach was swollen, it was pushing on my diaphragm so I couldn't breathe properly. He gave me some tablets and I was ok within a few days. He said stress could have caused it. Are you under any stress? If I were you, I'd pop along to your doctor or give NHS Direct a ring and see what they say. Hope you're feeling better soon

Probably not. If it was, the rennies would have made his pain better.

To be honest, I'm not sure what this is, but I'd lean towards something muscular. Do simple painkillers help (if it's stomach they probably won't)?

Not sure, I haven't tried taking them - the pain's bearable, and I'm not supposed to take ibuprofen type stuff (asthma and IBS). It definitely hurts more if I lean back and stretch my body out.

Does the pain radiate anywhere else. i.e. you have pain where you said, but do you have anywhere else? and when you say that it's comes about by standing up, do you mean that you feel the pain while you're standing, or "during the actual action of standing?"

Hope you feel well soon!

IBS?

Way out of my league, see your doctor.

Both whilst I'm standing and during the action of standing. The pain is centred around one small area. If I press on the area it hurts, but it's certainly not agonising. It's just below my breast bone (I believe) where my ribs start to spread out, if that helps.

You said the pain is centered around one small area- which side, right or left?

Also, it hurts when you press the area, does it hurt when you release the pressure?

Please remember that at the end you have to see you GP

It's sort of in the centre. It doesn't seem to hurt when I release the pressure. I just had another rennie which didn't do much, and I ate which didn't seem to make any difference. I'm veering towards pulled muscle now, I've pulled muscles before doing press ups (although usually in my back/shoulder). I'll have to wait until tomorrow to see a doctor anyway.

I do have a diagnosis in mind  But, as you're going to your GP tomorrow who without doubt will know tonnes and tonnes more than me, I'll wish you the best of luck now

Hope you feel well soon!

Thanks - what's your diagnosis, just out of interest? I'm meant to be going away for the weekend... hoping that whatever it is doesn't interfere with my plans.

I am not trying to avoid telling you, but after thinking about it, it doesn't fit. And it wouldn't have affected your weekend

Good luck mate / girl :p:

Hi Anon
I was wondering if you did in the end get a diagnosis from your doctor because I have the same symptoms including the IBS so i'd be very interested in hearing what that diagnosis might be.

Thanks

If I was taking a random guess, I'd say it's probably run of the mill gastric reflux which has been left uncontrolled. Go get yourself something like Zantac (Ranitidine), which is OTC, and see if your symptoms subside. The drug treatment regimens for these disorders are particularly long, usually at least a couple of weeks and you'd usually use something like Omeprazole, but the Zantac would work.

I'm not a doctor, but I had something very similar to this 2 years back.
Went through a year of hell trying to figure it out with all sorts of tests.

It turned out to be my Gall Bladder doing something it shouldn't be doing. It was swollen, and not working properly which caused the pain.
Had an operation to remove it and it pretty much sorted itself out after that!
