Stopping online grooming and shild sexual exploitation

Online grooming involves the preparation of minors for sexual abuse. Its incidence is alarming and evolving in step with technology and the internet. Mobile computing, latest-generation apps and more-sophisticated geolocation services have increased the problem exponentially. A report from the Internet Centre for Missing and Exploited Children estimates that 200m girls and 100m boys will be sexually victimized before reaching adulthood. A significant number of these will be lured online.

In the UK alone, the police recorded more than 9,000 cases of child sexual abuse with an online component between October 2017 and September 2018 (NSPCC, 2019). However, this is only the tip of the iceberg, as online grooming is known to be significantly under-reported.

My PhD has a real chance to:

1. Develop reliable prevention interventions to effectively combat online child sexual exploitation, including a dedicated intervention aimed at the highest-risk groups.

2. Develop a protocol to identify those adolescents who are already being groomed in order to intervene early and prevent abuse over long periods of time.
