Im no expert, but arent you meant to ask the questions BEFORE applying to spend 3 years studying it?

Reply 5

Nah.. you ask all the questions when it's too late to change anything, only to make you more nervous.
Well, I do at least...

Will meet you in a few months then! ^^

I'm pretty sure you're in the course right now but I have my own questions.. If I'm already a flight instructor with a fATPL, could I still do the (aerospace engineering) 'with pilot studies' and somehow not have to pay for the groundschool theory? I would perhaps reconsider it for Air Law to see how it differs slightly in the UK/another country... Also is the pilot studies as far as PPL? Because then I'd have fun teaching my classmates

Ummm... Basically, pilot studies is 50% ground school. The other half is 20 hours of flight that you need to get done before the end of the term.

If you then want to get your PPL you only need 15 or 25 hours (depending on if you want a NPPL or a JAR PPL) more which you can easily book through university for a very cheap price. Then you can attempt to get your ATPL if you want (which would come to be 40 grand...).

Everyone is aiming for the PPL... no one has the money for the ATPL, and everyone wants more than just 20 hours flight.

If you allready have your ATPL, there's not much point in doing it:

Firstly, you need to pay about 3 grand for the 20 hours (which is compulsory).
Secondly, Pilot Studies adds quite a lot of work on top of an already difficult course.
If you do it, you can't not do the ground school, as we have to do exams on it and all...

Oh, and that bit about teaching your classmates would get you hanged. There are a couple of pricks who boast about having done 10 or 15 hours previously, and we all hate them.

Hmm thanks for the advice! Because my plan was to finish the IB now in May (2009), take a gap year finish the lovely 14 exams for the fATPL by December (I've got all 750h of theory done! - I should get a record for doing it WITH the bloody IB :P I kid, i kid!) and the flying exams and IFR, MCC, and multi engine done by May 2010, (I've got 67 hours right now so it's gettin' there!).
I would then get an instructor's rating in the span from May 2010 - September 2010 before entering Aerospace engineering at Liverpool. I thought that since I would be so accustomed to flying in Portugal, the UK might be hectic to jump right into with instruction.
SO i'm confused as to whether I should get the FI rating before or during the course at a flightschool near Liverpool if such a course is available... Any suggestions?

P.S: I'm a relatively young boy at a big boy flying school :P I know what you mean about (false) intimidation and boasting pricks... I don't condone showing off, boasting or humiliating and I ain't a hypocrite! (I already feel bad about talking about myself so much as in the above) :/

- Thanks, Miguel

I'm just curious, are you British, or entirely Portuguese and bilingual. I used to live in Spain for 9 years before comming to uni, but I'm British.

Hey

I'm starting that course this year, the aerospace engineering with pilot studies at liverpool. I was wondering if there was any advice you could give me since you've been doing it for a few years now?

Although, I'm not sure if I'll be allowed to do it cos I was told a few days ago that I might not pass a JAR Class 2 medical, never mind the Class 1...:frown:

Thanks

You don't need the medical.

It's a bit of a rip off... most of the Pilot Studies lads only did the compulsory 20hrs and then gave up. To get your JAR you'd need around 60 hours of flight, a medical, loads of ground exams, and to buy a load of books... all in all it ends up being around 8 grand total.

Also, you have this extra lecture for 3 years. It's very interesting, but more work.

On the other hand, 20 hours experience (for 3000 quid) is pretty awesome, and good for your CV. And the Pilot Studies degree is generally seen as the top of the Aerospace.

For the 20 hours you don't need a medical, that's just needed for flying solo.

Liverpool's awesome... student union's really good... You'll have fun.

Sorry to ask such a silly question but I am international student and I would like to know how much extra do I have to pay for the pilot studies stuff. I mean, currently, the international student tuition fees in the uni is 13,500 pounds and I would like to know how much extra should we pay for the flying hours and all that?

Thanks!

I'm doing the "with pilot studies", so Hi
Has anyone received any information on applying for accommodation yet, apart from the open day invite?

The same... just about 3000 at the start (that gets you through the initial 20hrs).
It's a great experience, go for it!

Heya all,

I'm hopefully starting in september too (need to get the grade first :s-smilie:) for a BEng in Aerospace with Pilot Studies (want to join the Navy )

I know it costs extra (£3000?) for all the flight time, do you have to pay that all with your own money (/grants/loans)? Seems very expensive...I might just not eat for a few months :P haha

Looking forward to it though!

Yeah, you need to do 20 hours of flight in the first year to pass. It's an awesome experience and it'll stay on your CV for ever. But it costs about 3000 pounds.

It's good fun. I'm a third year now, doing my final exams.
