Accommodation in Aberdeen

Hey everybody there !
I'll be studying Law at Aberdeen this September..my main concern is choosing the right accommodation though..I wonder whats the best choice for an international undergrad student,...Most of all id like to be situated in a building where other undergrad students live and are there any twin rooms because I am kinda scared to sleep alone , .... I would appreciate any opinions
P.S Are there any single sex houses ?

Hi!

I went to Aberdeen 2 years ago and by then they had already started renovating the student village - so you cant go wrong with a lot of the accommodation in my opinion.

I was a student ambassador and to my knowledge, there are no twin rooms, everyone gets a single or 3/4 sized bed...I could be wrong tho.

So Hillhead village is where all the first year students are based. It's about 20 minutes walk from the main campus and there is also a bus you can take. It's really nice because everyone is new and wanting to make friends and you guys now have that fancy activities centre.

You can request to be in a single sex flat. I was in Hector Boece, responsibly priced and I lived with only 4 other girls and we shared a bathroom. Its was brand new when I moved in and I can imagine it is still nice.

On the university of Aberdeen website there is an option to have a live chat or you can send an email to the accommodation team to get more up to date info.

Hey, I'm a current first year living in Hillhead, and I'm international as well.
There are no twin rooms and I promise you, you will be glad there aren't haha
I live in Fyfe House, which is the cheapest option (together with Wavell and Adam Smith) at 90 pounds per week. I think that that is way too much for what you get - you share a bathroom (4 toilets, 4 showers) with around 15 other people, which is not a problem at all, but for 360 pounds a month it really is not great. I think Hillhead is way too expensive, but it really is the best option for a first year, especially if you want to be around other undergrads.
Hillhead is almost entirely first years, which is really great. Hillhead itself also organises lots of stuff, like movie nights, cooking classes, free yoga, etc. and it's always really fun. Hillhead is great if you want to make friends.

Even though Fyfe is expensive, I like staying here and I honestly can't understand why anyone would stay in any of the more expensive options - it is just a rip off tbh. I'm paying for it myself and I'm struggling already.

Also, there apparently are some houses with single sex accommodation, but tbh I don't know which ones they are. Maybe have a look at the accommodation part of the Aberdeen website.
I ticked that I don't care, but in Fyfe, half the floor is girls and the other half is boys, so you never really mix. I think that's kind of sad, but it might be great for you.

If you have any other questions, I'd be more than happy to answer them as far as I can! Just quote my answer in your reply so I get a notification

Hi,

Hillhead Student Village sounds like the best option for you! You are guaranteed to be housed with other other 1st year undergraduate students and you can choose to be in single gender accommodation (in any of the types of accommodation you are applying for). It is all single rooms we have, no twins but you will always be right next door to other people in case you ever feel scared.

The amount that you pay for your accommodation is inclusive of all bills - heating, electricity, water and wifi. There is also 24 hour security and welfare support so there is always someone there if you have problems at any time of the day or night. As someone mentioned above there are loads of classes and activities run by our SRAs which is a great way for you to meet other people living at Hillhead!

You can see more info about benefits of living at Hillhead at the following link: https://www.abdn.ac.uk/accommodation/our-accommodation/benefits-436.php

Are there many undergrads that privately rent? Do they tend to find it particularly difficult to fit in to uni life?

I'm looking at other options. I can't really justify any of the accommodation prices Aberdeen are asking for - I'm especially not so keen on sharing bathrooms.

There are places for students that are not university owned, like student roost and unite students. They are also in much better locations closer to shops and the uni.
