I'm moving there this year, Dan! There's one positive for you!

Upsides are that it is relativity near to both Unis, Near the town centre, and has a Sainsbury's/Waitrose/Loads of takeaways right outside...

Downsides are the Cost, its gone up, now they include the (****) gym in your rent, also UNITE will try to take as much of your deposit at the end, make sure you list ANY faults beforehand and if you have any problems they are slow to repsond, espcially to things like room move's...

You should list extra faults when you move in too...
Like the blue tack marks on your wall..which aren't there yet but will be at the end of the year.. and the stain in the carpet.. and the door bell not working properly etc.. even if it's all dandy, you might as well add it in!!

Is this because you had a bad experience with a room move? The guy who showed me around told me that the tenants used to pay for the gym if they wanted to, but now it's free to everybody!? How much has it gone up by? :frown:
The deposit thing is typical for all student accomodation though, funnily UNITE (exchange works) were the only ones during my 4 year degree to give me any of my deposit back at all.. If you ask me, private landlords are MUCH worse.. Charging for missing furniture that was never there in the first place etc... And with the problems thing, that's pretty commonplace too, we've gone months on end with no hoover, a dodgy fridge and a house that was in a filthy state when me moved in.
Honestly, I don't think you get any better anywhere else, unless you just get lucky.

This year the internet and gym ARE included in your rent.

My flatmate moved rooms and she did it with no problems at all. I think you're going to get people with good and bad experiences of anywhere.

I haven't got all of my deposit back from this year but i do know quite a few people who did get their full deposit back so again it just depends on how tidy you leave your flat when you leave..

Yeah they're included. Everything is.

Reply 8

What's the internet like? At Exchange Works it was pathetically slow.. And damn expensive!

Reply 9

The internet was expensive there last year.

The internet included next year is the slower speed (512kbps) I think so you may have to upgrade to the faster one and I'm not sure how much it will be.

But generally, Sainsbury's is a minutes walk on the corner of london road/boston street with a wilkinsons just opening next door, waitrose and costcutter just a few mins walk and easy to get into the city centre.

Reply 10

Its an extra £5 per week to upgrade to a 2mb connection.

Bit overpriced if you ask me.

I hate how those places overcharge for everything, including rent, utilities and deposit deductions, you even have to pay extra to wash and dry your clothes. So they're jumping on the bandwagon with the internet too - charging everybody for it, even people who don't have computers - then adding on another fiver a week for a half decent connection...?? £270 for a year's worth? On top of the extra we're paying for the privilige of having the internet in the first place? I pay a tenner a month for lightening fast internet connection here.. My goodness.. And that Oliver guy who showed me around really, really wanted me to sign up - Free gym this, free internet that.. If I didn't sign today some foreign student was going to take my room etc etc.. My stay at the Forge is getting more expensive by the day! So this 512kbps, is that just piss slow or what?

It's a choice to go there though - I mean if someone didn't have a computer, no interest in the gym or double beds or whatever, would they not opt for a different place?

I just didn't realise that to get internet less than half of the speed I have now I'll need to cough up another £270 a year. A clear and blatant rip-off. Nobody told me this. I was told broadband was free, not that they'd hacked up the rent cost for everybody to cover it, and 512kbps is a joke. Okay, yes - I should have looked into it more beforehand, but I shouldn't have to, I should be told exactly what the score is, not an over-simplified, rose-coloured version of it to get me to sign on the dotted line. I loved my room and like i said, I was told that if i didn't sign up that day there would be a very good chance that all the studio rooms would be taken by the influx of foreign students they were getting in to view the following day.. So stupidly I did. I'm just finding out about all the hidden extras now. My bad I know!! . And of course they still have loads of studio rooms left  They must be on comission.

I was placed in the Forge, it wasn't on my 3 options, and yep, the better internet is pricey! :frown:

Does anyone know if all beds in Forge are single/double?

Well a lot of places in Sheffield still charge for broadband at all - Charlotte Court I think is like £350 for the year. Or they charge an admin charge or utilities charge or whatever.

You're dreaming if you expect 10MB for free in student accommodation or whatever - besides, students don't NEED speed do they - you don't need superfast broadband for studying. It's only when you start downloading gigabytes of torrents (which no one has any right as such to do) that you really 'need' it. It's even fine for online gaming according to my friends, and torrents etc on that note. See how you like it before you complain... you're just assuming it'll suck. Besides, it's not like a lot of broadband ISPs actually supply what they quote (eg. "up to 8mb" is a joke).

It's just the way things are with student accommodation in particular - at least it IS all inclusive, you saw the room and the price, you decided that it was ok for what it is, including all bills.

I dunno, it's just with contracts and accommodation and all, you really do need to read what you are getting before you sign anything.

As I said in your other post - all the beds in Forge 2 are 3/4 doubles, however only SOME of the ones in Forge 1 are, it depends on the room.

Sue, although I appreciate the fact that you've taken time to respond, I'm getting the feeling that you are deliberately quoting me and adding derogatory comments to my posts. Not just in this thread. Please tell me it's all in my head.

When did I ever mention 10MB? I also don't appreciate the insinuation that I download torrents (you might want to re-read your post). Yes I do realise that one should examine a tenency agreement thoroughly beforehand, as I said earlier. I also said that I asked the staff about the contents of the agreement since I was under the impression I needed to sign quicky, yes I shouldn't have done, thanks for pointing that out.

Besides, finding out about the internet thing got my goat a little, so I just fancied a rant, that's all.

I didnt imply you do download torrents just many students do .. but why do you need fast internet? I want it for gaming myself, but general browsing you dont need it so I cant understand why you make such a fuss before you at least try it out.

And it is in your head as im hardly posting these days lol  But it just gets my back up a lil when people whine that stuff isnt included (as internet wasnt last year) and then whine that it is!!
