Stuck with A-Level choices

Ok guys I need some help.

I am in the middle of picking my a-level choices to go to 6th form and I know three subjects that I am definately doing next year, they are English Literature, Drama and History. Now the problem is that I am in two minds about my fourth subject. I am torn between doing Art and Photography because both of the courses look really good but I can only do four AS levels at my schools 6th form (it bites that we have to do General Studies for our fifth one because unfortunately it is compulsory). So I need some advice on which of the two to pick. Now please guys, before you post a reply, can you not bother to go on about 'respected' subjects or tell me that they are both a doss or rubbish like that from a personal opinion because I am only asking which one out of the two you think that I should do. It would also help if anyone doing one or both of these subjects can help me choose to with reasons why to pick the subjects.

I would be very appreciative for your advice.

I'd do art, mainly because i don't know much about photography, however art is a lot of work. btw, art isn't seen as a doss subject
Hmmm, that's a tough one. Since I don't do either subject and am really bad at things like that (can barely draw stick people lol) I can't tell you any more about the kind of thing you do in each, the workload etc. You could talk to some people in your sixth form who do to help you decide. I'd just say to pick the one you enjoy the most, but if you really can't decide, art might be better in terms of the broader range you cover. But then again, if you want to specialise in photography as a career, obviously that would be the better choice. Oh, and I wouldn't worry about them not being respected; English lit and history are both very well respected (and I'm not just saying that because I do them lol) so you'll have at least 2 'good' A-levels.

I do neither, but I know that art (don't know about photography) requires craploads of work.

Oh I've had a go at both( not for very long and dropped because of different reasons!) Both are fantastic and its a shame you can't do both but like others have said they do require loads of coursework! what do you perfer doing? Lots of drawing and I do mean lots!!!!! or going out and looking for the perfect piccy? Photography is quite expensive as well with you requiring a good camera and paying for materials, like with any art course. I suggest reading into the syllabus of both courses and seeing which appeals to you. See whats involved and how the course works out. I would have loved to carry on with my art AS this year but due to the amount of textile coursework I have, it just was not feasible.

Think about which would be easier to carry on with away from school. That way, if you can carry on with it easily, and perhaps enter competitions (perhaps these are more likely for photography???) then any achievements you get, you can still put down on your UCAS form to let admissions tutors know you're interested in them, and you'd still get the satisafaction from doing the activity. Hope that helps in your decision making!
Photography is more fun but art is probably better for career prospects e.t.c. Its up to you though

I did Art at GCSE and thought it was excellent. However, the jump from GCSE to A-level Art is HUGE..if you can handle doing tons of work, then it'll be alright for you. I did Art AS last year as a kinda "chillin out" subject. I thought i'd be able to take my mind off things and relieve any stress onto my sketchpad. Art actually took up more time than any of my other three AS subjects and i got really sh*t mark at the end of it...so speaking from my own experience i'd say do photography (although i know nothin' at all about it and probably requires similar attention!)
I had the same kind of problem. For me it was between psychology and RS with me being good at RS and it being less of a 'soft' subject. But i ended up going for psychology just because i'd been curious to see what it wa slike for a couple of years and it was really just gut instinct. I'm really happy i chose it now - i'm predicted an A, it's really interseting and people doing RS are finding it veeery boring. So i'd say go with the one that just 'feels right'. I know a lot of people will disagree with me but even if you like both there's probably something telling you to go for one over the other and even if you can't explain this, just trust it. Failing that of course you could just flip a coin

lol liking the coin-flipping idea  - Hmmm, one of my friends does AS level Art, he's got a *LOT* of work to do, I think that both subjects are art courses, but I don't know, so you'd probably still be doing art whichever one you pick. If you're happy to continue with what you know (i.e. 'normal' art) then go for Art, if you fancy a change, then go for Photography. Alternatively, do AS Art in year 12, and AS Photography in year 13, or vice versa. I don't think Art could ever really be seen as a doss subject, I didn't do it past year 9, but I know that my friends who did GCSE Art did a lot of work, so it's a good subject to have to show that you can handle large amounts of work. I think Art is probably more recognised than Photography, cos people are more likely to have an idea what an AS in Art would involve, there'd be some confusion as to what AS Photography was about, but, just do whichever one feels right for you. I didn't take either subject, so I don't entirely know what I'm talking about, but I know what it's like to be torn beetween two subjects, in the end I just went for the one I'd feel happier doing. If you start out doing one, and find you don't like it, you could always change course if it was early enough into the term. Good luck anyway

It depends on what kind of course you want to read in university because some particular unis or courses don't like specific subjects. Ask some older students in your school and get some advice or have a look on the website what kind of subjects unis or courses require. However, I would choose Art rather than Photography. I did Art for AS level, well there are massive work to do indeed but even if you do Art you can still do some photography and that's what I did. I'm really interested in photography so I used photography in my personal project.
Art would be quite good as it's kind of practical.
