Night shift work in supermarkets

Hi,

I have recently applied for a night shift position in a supermarket and I don't think I thought it through properly. I guess the majority of work will be shelf staking which I am all for however I'm not to sure of they carrying and lifting boxes. I am girl, 5ft 4 and I have hardly any strength at all. I once worked in the warehouse at argos, I didn't find it easy carrying big bulky heavy boxes but I got by.

Do you think I would manage a nightshift job?
Do many women work nights or is it mostly males?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

I knew women that worked nights.

I can only suggest you suck it and see. At worst you get stronger and can then do the job. (Or get fired :s-smilie:)

I guess so.
Hopefully I get an interview and then the job, then I will be able to see if I can do it (or not)

Sainsburys.

I applied for checkout job at tesco years ago, got an interview and then told the job was on milk and dairy, I was too nervous back then so I said yes I will come to the trial tomorrow, I didn't.

A few women work night shifts at M&S, they can stack whilst the men get the goods up to the shop floor.
Don't you have to be 18 still?

Sorry to deviate from the thread topic - but why were you scared of working on milk and dairy?

I applied for both sainsburys and tescos night shifts...didn't get either.

Tesco's was a group interview, and I was the only girl...and the youngest :frown:
I've worked night shifts, they're my favourite (and I'm a girl)

I've stocked and shelved at Waterstone's, that was fine, lifting the boxes weren't too much of a problem; if I did come accross something that was too heavy, I just took things out of the boxes which took longer but I got the job done.

I've also worked nights in Tesco's, most of the time I just had to shelve though, I didn't have too much trouble with the boxes- then I got transferred to a 24-hour Tesco's and got put on the tills so that was pretty easy.

But the best night work is in clubs and bars
PS: Night shifts have THE best pay! So you can afford to work less shifts during exam time/when you need to. It's great!

I wasn't scared.
I was too nervous to say no to the women. The job I went for was on checkouts, I didn't want to work on dairy.

Good to hear that you managed. I don't think I would have much problems stacking shelves and the pay makes it worth it.

I've done work in nightclubs, I've worked abroad in clubs that are open till 8am good times but the money was rubbish, wouldn't do that again.

I work the night shift at Sainsbury's when not at Uni - plenty of women work there. Generally the men are put on the heavier sections (boxed juice/cheese etc) and the women go on lighter stuff. I think you'll be fine - trust me!

Now I need to get the interview and charm my way in.

My night shift only pays £7.56 an hour. I think I'm getting ripped off. Although I'm usually awake those hours anyway, and £75 a night is still pretty damn good.

My mate does the M&S night shift and gets £12 an hour! Although he has been there a while so it might be part reason why.

lol yeah, the pay's not all that and theres loads of people they could get who want the job but it is so much fun though. Night shifts in a supermarket is much better pay and it's not bad to do, can get a bit repetitive at times, other times it's so boring but bring an ipod and remember how much you're being paid to be bored!
I got night shift 2nite =(
