Winchester On-campus Accommodation 2021: The Ultimate Guide

We're on the road back to better days! You may be thinking about joining Winchester this year and staying on campus in our accommodation, and if you are, this is the guide for you. Below features extensive information about the different types of on-campus accommodation we offer.

Burma Road Student Village

Burma Road student village is on the King Alfred Quarter and consists of 5 tower blocks, with all rooms being en-suite with shared kitchens. The kitchens also feature lockable cupboards and the buildings are accessed by a secure swipe card. Residents have the University Gym on their doorstep along with a laundrette and easy quick access to all the facilities on the King Alfred campus. There are designated quiet areas and self-contained flats set aside for couples or students with children.

St Elizabeth’s Hall / Beech Glade Hall

St Elizabeth’s Hall is a traditional hall of residence, rooms are arranged along communal corridors with shared bathrooms and kitchenettes at various points. The building is on the other side of the King Alfred Quarter to Queens and Burma Road, so many rooms offer great views across Winchester and the Southdown’s. All the rooms are larger than the average single study bedrooms as well, with each room having a vanity area, with washbasin and mirror above.

As mentioned earlier, these halls feature kitchenettes instead of kitchens. This is because St Elizabeth’s is catered accommodation. When living here you will receive a weekly catering allowance on your campus card. Students are free to spend the allowance as they wish, the allowance should be able to cover approximately 14 meals a week from any University managed outlet.

These halls also feature lockable contents and access to the blocks and flats is by a secure swipe card. Also available at Queens Road Student Village are twin rooms, where to residents can share a larger room and en-suite bathroom at a reduced cost. For those who wish for more space, a limited number of premium en-suite rooms are also available, where residents can enjoy a room double the size of a regular bedroom.

FAQS:

Is there any security for these houses? Site Stewards are the University security officers and are based at both the West Downs and King Alfred Quarters. They are here to ensure the security of the University, and they help with unwanted visitors and noise. They are also available to give security advice and out of hours pastoral advice. All site stewards are first aid trained and can facilitate access to our buildings by the emergency services. Our Police liaison officer can also provide advice to students.

Do we clean the flats? The University’s Campus Management team visit all on campus residences regularly and clean communal and shared facilities (toilet and shower) areas. To Break this down further, they won’t clean rooms or en-suites and will clean the surfaces and floors in the kitchens. They will also hoover corridors.

How do we wash clothes? We have 3 laundrettes across both campuses

Is there internet? The cost of data connection is included in the residence fees and wireless access is available in all University on campus accommodation. All study bedrooms also include a wired data point for a strong guaranteed connection.

Is the Gym Free? Gym Membership is not free, but does provide free access to all fitness and well-being classes during the week. There is more information here.

How far are the halls from the City Centre? The halls are all around 15 minute walk to the centre of Winchester. There is also a bus stop opposite west downs which will take you to the city centre.

Are all bills covered? Yes, the price you see if the price you pay. Everything is included in this price.

Where are the nearest Supermarkets? For an extensive grocery shop, students can head to Sainsbury’s at Badger Farm SO22 4QB or Tesco Extra (open 24 hours) at Winnall, SO23 7RS. Both are only a short drive or bus ride away or can be delivered to you. If you need to stock up when on campus, then the essentials are available from the SU shops on both campuses.

As always, if you have any questions then pop them below or get in touch with the housing team to speak with the experts.

Hi there, I'm interested in knowing more about the Beech Glade option which quotes: Shared Facilities Bedroom: 28.2 Week Contract for a total of £5,003.80 (20/21 academic year). I'm quite an anxious person so I'd prefer to be at Beech Glade, I read somewhere it was designated as a quiet hall? Could you please outline what a 28.2 week contract would cover? I would be studying for a masters.

Thanks in advance!

Hello!

those were the prices for the 20/21 academic year, they may be change for the 21/22 year, I'm still waiting from some confirmation from the housing team before this is updated.

You read that correctly, Beech Glade is currently designated as a quiet hall. However, all of the accommodations have a quiet area, which have slightly different rules about noise levels.

The contract for Beech Glade is 28.2 weeks as it is not possible to live in the halls over the holiday periods, rooms will need to be emptied during these periods. Beech Glade is catered accommodation as well, so included with this is a smart card that will be loaded with credit each week, this will equate to approximately 14 meals a week from University catering outlets. Rooms in Beech Glade are slightly larger than the average room with a mirror and wash basin. These rooms also feature a communal kitchenette and bathroom facilities as well.

In terms of being a postgraduate student in accommodation, there is more information on that here:

The guide has been updated for the 21/22 academic year. If you are in the middle of an application and have any questions please feel free to ask them here!

Hello,

The self contained flats are priced for 2021 as £9,117 for the 1 bed and £ 10,080 for the 2 bed. The flats themselves are limited at west downs and usually reserved for students with families. So if you are a solo applicant, I would advise having a strong 2nd choice if you apply to a flat as a 1st choice.

Ok great thanks for that, Im a mature student so trying to see as many options as possible!

Ive to wait until my offer changes to unconditional anyway so i cant book anything yet sadly. Do you know if burma sells out fast? It would probalby be my best option with its proximity to the gym and the college but im worried theyll be all gone by the time my offer changes.

No problem at all, feel free to ask as many questions on here as you want!

If you like Burma for it's location on campus, I would say that Queens Road is only a minute away from Burma. These are our biggest halls, so there are a lot of rooms available. If an application is in before the housing guarantee passes then there is usually a strong chance of getting a Burma or Queens room, it can vary by year though.

No problem! All of the University is a lot closer together than it may seem, even the West Downs campus is only around a 5 minute walk from the King Alfred campus. In terms of selecting who you want to live with, I don't believe you are able to select you are able to select based on any parameter other than regular or quiet halls. The housing team will try and group people in similar courses / faculties as well though.

Is that in the main room rather than the en-suite?
