Hi, I'm hoping to go to Cambridge in 2012 to study Economics trying to decide between Trinity Hall and Jesus. Visited them both and like them both. Anyone got any suggestions?

Good job on not searching out admissions statistics! You've got the right idea, having visited them both and trying to decide which one you like based on that.

They're both "older" Colleges, well-situated for either Science or Arts students (although for economists Trinity Hall is closer to the Sidgwick site, you could happily bike around everywhere!). For both Colleges, you get a pleasant walk over Clare Bridge in the morning if you like (am I biased as a Clare student? - maybe...).

I'd suggest asking a current student at either College what it's like to study Economics there, perhaps in the College threads in this forum. Apart from that, try thinking really hard about what would make or break your choice of College, and try measuring them up against that.

Hope this helps! All Colleges are far more alike than different, though, so don't worry to much about whatever decision you make. If you've got any more questions that I can answer for you, feel free to fire them my way.

Jesus is bigger than Trinity Hall. So, would you prefer a larger college or a smaller one?

Both have pretty good locations but Trinity Hall probably has the slightly better one. By good I mean, proximity to the town centre and other amenities.

Trinity Hall is closer to the Sidgwick Site, where all the Economics lecture are held. BUT, you'll probably end up cycling from either one. The cycle from Jesus will be noticeably longer though.

Some of the first year accommodation at Jesus is AMAZING! Newly built and spacious. Don't know what it's like at Trinity Hall.

I'd probably be inclined to go for Jesus if I were you but that is only a personal preference. It won't make much difference wherever you apply. You'll be happy to get in to any college I'd assume? :p:
King's, it's a beautiful college and has a phenomenal choir!
I've just been pooled by Homerton. Any thoughts on it? I've heard the typical comments about it being 'far away' and things about it 'not being a real college'.
Is it really not taken seriously?
Would I be very out of it if I went there due to distance?

Nothing to worry about. Homerton is very much a "real college"; the only thing to bear in mind is that it's a little way out of town. Still, it's not really that far if you were to bike, and trust me - almost everybody in Cambridge does.

So do you mean that you've been put into the pool by Homerton having applied there, that they've made you an offer after being put into the pool by another college, or that they're inviting you to another interview after being put into the pool by another college?
Ilford County High Sixth Form

or

Seven Kings Sixth Form

or

Beale Sixth Form

Need to choose between the three. If anyone has pros and cons then that would be total awesomeness

I presume you mean that you have been pooled by the college you applied to and 'fished' by Homerton. It is obviously a bit further from the town centre than most colleges, and has a lot of Education students (since it is next door to the education faculty). It is still a 'real college', although I think due to a technicality it didn't have college status until quite recently (or is still in the process of attaining it). You'll have to get used to biking it to the town centre and wherever your faculty is, and taking taxis back if you're out late, but otherwise I don't think there's that much difference from a typical college.

Hi - I'm afraid you might be in the wrong forum. Have you tried posting in the Schools forum?

Hope this helps!

You're taking English by the looks of things. Friend formerly at Hom (didn't take English but buds with some Englings there) says that they were going on about coming something like 11th out of all the colelges for English in 2010 - 7th for Part I including highest starred first in the whole year. Better than Johns, Trinity, Kings, Queens, Downing, Selwyn... you can tell she got to hear a lot about this. Anyway, I think they're taken seriously now. Much publicized royal charter gave them equal status to all other colleges.
Cycling to town and lectures is 15 mins or there are plenty of buses. I used to go there a fair bit, it's actually quite beautiful. Good luck.

No, they have their piece of vellum from Prince Philip now - got it over the summer.

Yes, so 'quite recently'.
I wonder if anyone who knows the university fairly well is willing to assist me? This coming Tuesday, (11th), I will be visiting Cambridge; I wish to know whether there is a particular area of the university that is worth a visit? Such as study areas etc.? Any assistance offered would be greatly appreciated! If it is of relevance, I wish to study a financial course.

If finance is what you're looking to do, then I'm guessing it's a masters/postgrad course? If so, it will probably be offered by the Judge Business School - might be worth a visit?

Sorry, I meant to say I've been fished out the pool by Homerton. I originally applied to Selwyn. I have a second interview at Homerton on Thursday.

I'm just skeptical about the distance, I know its not really that far but I'd want to feel part of the university: not just part of Homerton. I'll see what I think on Thursday... if I even get an offer from them!

I completely understand your worries - I was fished out by Homerton this time last year - but believe me when I say they come to nothing. You're just as much a part of the University as you would be in any other college and nothing stops you from being as involved as you want to be in university life. I never let a short bicycle ride/walk/bus journey stop me from going somewhere when I want to and on nights out you are always guaranteed to see Homerton people about, be it in clubs, societies or the Union. I have friends in numerous other colleges and being central doesn't make you feel part of the University, as many can testify - it's how involved you make yourself.

Brilliantly put - I agree completely.
n_251: No, I am looking at courses in the Finance sector to commence after completion of A-levels, not looking for postgrad courses. Does the Judge business school offer courses for Undergrads as well?

Thank you for taking the time to reply.

Cambridge does not offer any finance-related courses at undergraduate level as far as I know. The only undergrad course JBS offers is the one-year management option that people doing Economics (possibly other subjects too) can do in their final year.
Where are you guys finding the colleges categorised into groups a, b and c btw?
