The Big 'Which Cambridge College?' Thread

I'm not to fussed. Any Suggestions?

Generally speaking, that's not how the College system works. Cambridge has a pool system, and Colleges would rather take a strong applicant from the pool than a weaker one who applied to them. Most people choose a College based on other factors, such as location, social scene and so on: the quality of teaching should be the same regardless of College.

Hope this helps!
I'm not gonna add anything new to this, just gonna say that Languages Nutter may have nutter in their name but is spot on. The college system doesn't have easier or harder ones really, the numbers game doesn't work because if you go for a less 'popular' college they're far less likely to chuck you in the pool whilst if you go for a supposedly more competitive one if you're not quite good enough to get in the pool will work in your favour.

However you may decide that the different college requirements (some may ask you for different things at interview, some may request different qualifications etc. etc.) might work in your favour if you go for certain ones, but don't pick just on those make sure you do genuinely like your choice's location and feel and look.
I'm going to say my own. HOMERTON.

I heard you can apply "Openly" and you get put into like an area. And all Colleges see you, then they say we shall interview you.

You can. A huge amount of people at my college did. Since we're the biggest UG college, we get a lot of pooled applicants. It gets to the point where it's harder for me to spot people who weren't pooled than people who were.

That being said, most of my Education buddies applied directly to Hom, but that's because the Ed Fac is, like...through the fence

Also, are they more lenient if I apply straight to them?
I /love/ Homerton, but I'm admittedly biased. Everyone will rave for their college and make out it's the best. It's hard to be objective about it.

Kings is very popular, being in the centre of town and famous, and all. I couldn't guess if it's difficult - my only guess would be that competition for places will be very high - as with all colleges.

Nope, you'll be treated exactly the same as an applicant they've taken from the pool.
ARU?

Check my signature for GCSES.

I haven't heard anything about this rumour. I shouldn't think that any Cambridge college would be overly interested in your GCSES unless they're frankly fairly terrible. I know that to get on a Cam-sponsored summer school they generally want 5A*s-As minimum. Otherwise, I'm not sure.

Do you mean 5A*s or 5 A* and A grades altogether?

Just five A grades. I should think they'd expect at least an A grade in GCSE Geography, if you'd taken it. Bearing in mind, however, that these grades were for a Cambridge summer school, not the application itself.

That's why I'm picking Cambridge, because LSE it would be a straight rejection. (Because of GCSE) And hopefully I'll do good in AS because I'm doing subjects I like. Are you at Cambridge now?

Good choice of university  Can I ask what GCSE grades you got for LSE to be so bothered about?

I am, yes. Well. Technically I'm at home until tomorrow, when term starts
