which are the most quiet colleges in cambridge? (not necessarily the small ones)

There's one in the Grafton (5 minutes walk from the back of Christ's) and the Arts Picturehouse (go left out of Christ's, cross road and it's 5 mins walk) Christ's has its own cinema as well

Huh, didn't know some restaurants kick you out if you're under 21.

I didn't expect it either. Was very embarrassing having to get up and leave. The restaurant is just over the road from Pizza Hut, and then a little to the left. The most irritating thing was that they weren't even full. I mean, it was busy, but there were a few tables!

Well natural sciences is the biggest course in Cambridge, so in most colleges they have the biggest cohort in any given year.

There will be at least 10 Physical NatScis in Christ's each year
(There's usually 20-30 NatScis in total I think  )

I've made my mind up now.

What is St Catharine's like? I'm considering applying for Bio NatSci there. Is cooking a possibility?

Off the top of my head...

Quieter colleges

Ones to avoid

I'm not sure what the situation is like at other colleges (although Jesus didn't have many tourists when I was last there), so I'm sure other people will have different opinions and be able to add to this. :p:

Um ... not entirely. Clare is fairly big and is home to Clare Ents as well as being a handy walkway for tourists and students alike so not amazingly quiet (I could be wrong on this, of course). It is beautiful and green. I have no idea about the state of the rooms. From what I know of physics lectures, it's not amazingly near.

what about sidney sussex?

There are two colleges at Cambridge that have ties to my school to a certain extent: St. John's and Corpus Christi. The former because my school's founder went there and the latter because his father did -- this was in the 16th century.

My question is whether it has any relevance to your application whatsoever for a college to have ties with your school when applying for a place at Cambridge. Traditionally more people have gone to Cambridge (around 30 p.a. in recent years I believe) from my school than to Oxford, so I'd assume it does have some relevance, however this might just be because more students choose to apply to Cambridge. I have no statistics to go by.

Does anybody know if it has any effect on your application to apply to certain colleges that have traditionally accepted students from your school? Perhaps this has become less important in recent years. I'd appreciate any insightful comments.

Thanks,
Und
It won't help your application, admissions are based solely on academic criteria.

If it's links like your head is in touch with the admissions tutor, it generally means (as my head of sixth form puts it) "If you don't get in we get more detailed feedback which could help next year's applicants/you if you decide to reapply". There isn't really any point.

My headteacher studied Mathematics at Cambridge (exactly what I want to do) so he may be of some help. As you suggested I think the fact that my school's had so many applicants (successful and otherwise) in the past will be helpful as it means they know what they're doing when it comes to admissions. My specific question however is whether applying to that particular college will have an effect and the answer to that is probably no going by what you said.

Thanks for the input everybody!
G'day guys

I'm unable to go to the UK to attend an open day and I was wondering if there were any cricketers that would be able to answer the question in terms of ovals and/or indoor nets etc.

Cheers
I would be interested in knowing that too.

When I was in Wells Cathedral School, they had very nice grounds. The oval was almost manicured

edit: oh, that kind of college - never mind

I'd agree with everything said above. Why does your school have ties with those colleges? I bet they'd rather have ties with Oxford than St. Johns.

It's very small and looks nice. Quite near physics, I think but could be wrong.

It's absolutely brilliant.

Not that I'm biased or anything...

My school has ties with these colleges because the person who founded my school went to St. John's and his father went to Corpus Christi some 450 years ago.

About the latter part of your post:

To be honest, if you go to the sort of school that has 'ties' with a specific Oxbridge college, you're probably at a large advantage anyway, because that's probably a good school

They're hardly going to look at your application and go 'oh, he goes there? Better let him in!' though.

To be honest they've probably forgotten by now :p:
