Is Pembroke really generous with grants?

What kind of grants? They give £60 a year book grants to everyone, and are relatively generous if you do well in your exams (I think I got several hundred pounds in awards / prizes / etc. during my time there ).

And a more general question:
I'm not a very sporty(I still play football and snooker though) person and definitely not a fan of drama. I know that Downing is strong at sports and Pembroke is a bit thepsy, but certainly I can choose not to join these, right?

Yes, no one will force you to join the Pembroke Players or the rowing club.

I saw on the Pros and Cons Wiki Page that there are book grants and travel grants.

If the atmosphere at Pembroke is as described as above, it should suit me, but Downing's accomodation is really tempting.:colondollar:

Oh yeah, I forgot about the travel grants as I never used them - I think it was something like up to £200 a year if you could claim it was somehow academic but I can't be sure that any of that is right, perhaps one of the other Pembroke students on here could clarify.
Pembroke is famous for its exam performance in the physiology bio natural sciences paper? Must be a pretty subtle sort of fame...

I thought that as well - I didn't know that we were 'famous' for any particular exam performance.

hi guys,

what are the rules regarding who is let in to a college? For example, if I am a student at college X and my friend is at college Y, would i be allowed into my friends college (Y) whenever I wanted to or are the colleges only open to the members of that particular college?

Yeah, don't worry - you should be able to move freely between colleges. This includes King's and John's, which charge for admission (admission's free to members of the University). Things might be a little different if you're talking about late at night (), so it's probably just easier to get your friend to come and meet you at the Porters' Lodge. In most cases, though, there shouldn't be a problem. :nah:
I really can't pick between the colleges. I'm worried about my chances of getting an interview. My choices were between Trinity and St Edmund's and for some time I looked set on St Edmund's but now I'm wondering if I want to go for Trinity? I'm just worried that my grades might prevent me from getting an interview even though I am a mature student:

GCSEs: 4A* 4A 2B
A-Levels: (2005/2006) Maths A (480/600) Biology A (490/600) Chemistry B (478/600)
AS-Level: French B

Open University: 120 credits at Level 1, 120 credits at Level 2, Taking 120 credits at level 3 and aiming to achieve at least a 2:1.

I'm thinking of also applying as an affiliated student. Trinity and St Edmund's both gave positive responses although St Edmund's responses were slightly confusing.

I'm just worried that if I apply to Trinity I won't get a look in being a mature student with not such a stellar record against school-leaving bright-sparks who have a galaxy of A*s.

I'm really tearing my hair out about this not to mention writing my PS which seems to be taking forever. Argh I'm so stressed out about all this.

Hi all,

I can't decide between Fitzwilliam and Murray Edwards.
I was wondering if any of you can give me some extra information about both?

I would prefer an en-suite room if possible, what are the chances of getting one at Fitz (I was told all freshers have one at ME)?

I will probably do quite a bit of self catering, so decent cooking facilities would be a plus. In saying that, I will also use the catered option when I need to but I am quite fussy and so would like lots of good choices.
I have read that the food at Fitz is not very good, can anyone say why?
Also, the internet charges at Fitz are a little confusing, how does this work? Are there any additional charges at ME?

I have visited both of these colleges, Fitz on an open day, and Murray Edwards on an individual tour.
I don't really have any negatives about Murray Edwards but I didn't really get a feel for the college atmosphere the same as when I visited Fitz (due to not many people being around).

They are both brilliant colleges and I just can't decide between them!
I have 4 days before my college internal deadline for UCAS

Please help me to sort through these last minute niggles!!
Thank you!

Hey, I'm an M.E 3rd year and would be happy to answer any questions you have! Food here is amazing, we get lots of Fitz diners popping over. Great formals, saturday brunch and general hall service is always of a good standard, with at least 2 meat and 2 veggie options, plus soup and potatoes and salad and lots and lots of PUDDINGS! Internet is just a termly cost added onto your bill each year. Hope I could be of help =)
Anyone here at magdelene? Studying economics? Just wondering if anything in particular prompted you to choose Magdelene over e.g Churchill which I am also considering.

Also, what type of reputation does Magdelene have regarding sports and which other colleges are relations best with?
the only college known really for being anything specific is really kings (left wing). is it really the main thing influencing your college choice? differences are likely to be minimal in terms of student activism

Downing is quite a political college, though it has its share of both left and right wingers.

It does seem unusual to base your choice of college on their political stance - what about things like their performance in your chosen subject?

I'm caught between Queen's, Christ's and Emmanuel for Architecture.
Anyone care to compare friendliness, cost, distance needed to travel, accomodation, etc.
Thanks

I applied to St Catharines. It looks lovely and very science based academic!

Hi!

Thanks for the reply

I applied to M.E ( submitted my UCAS application on Wednesday!). Fingers crossed that I get an interview!

I was just wondering about Tuesday and Saturdays evening meals. I read somewhere (can't remember where, I've read that much about it!) that on these days, M.E students go to Fitz if they aren't attending the formal. Is this the case?
I take it there is quite a bit of intermingling between the two colleges?

how difficult is it to get into st catharines?
i heard its a very academic school, like in the top 5 or something. my grades might not be good enough! :O
I'm trying to chose which college i am going to apply to but i'm stuck. At this point i honestly have no preference and i'm leaning towards an open application but whats the negatives to this?
I've read through the pros and cons wiki article (which was really helpful) but which colleges are focussed on english/drama? also, i am predicted A*AAA with AAAB at AS Level so are there colleges that are out of my reach?

thanks in advance, i am really looking for first hand opinions, applying for cambridge is really stressful!
Has anybody else looked at application statistics?! Someone told me to and now I am in a righttt pickle haha. Is it actually 'true' that some colleges are easier to get into than others?

It's hard to say. The pooling system should even it out to some extent. My opinion is that some colleges are (slightly) easier to get into, but this point is quite often debated.
Hey, sorry I was going to post in the thread but I kind of need help asap with ucas going off so soon.

Basically, I need help picking a college. I am applying to cambridge with a 2 year old (he will be 3 next october). I need a college who will be supportive, non-judgemental and understand of my situation. I am either thinking to live in family accomodation OR stay mon-fri and go home at the weekends leaving my 'baby' with my parents because of the short 8 week terms I think this would be feasible. (I also live in London so could go home whenever pretty easily).

I am also 19 and I am not interested in defering entry so don't want to consider mature colleges. I also don't want to go to a women only college!

My grades are gcse, a*aaaaabbcc. not great.
AS - aabb, geography was 94%, and the b 2 marks away from an A (resitting the unit in jan)

I am predicted a*aa.

I need a test at interview because of the weakness of my academics (my college has recommended I should definitely do this) also with the submission of an essay.

So can someone help meeeeeee :frown: I don't want to apply somewhere that they will be judgemental on the fact I have been a teenage mum and realise that I both have the potential and motivation to do well in a degree with/without a child.

If someone could help it would be amazing.
