Though, I'm sure you'd have fun at any college you went to really.

Even Christ's?

Sadly, it was only voted the 7th best. If you want good May Balls undoubtedly colleges such as St John's and Trinity throw the best ones.

However Clare and King's have cellars which people frequently frequent, and as already said Queens has popular bops/ents and Emma had the student run bar. Though, I'm sure you'd have fun at any college you went to really.

So it must have been last year for 3rd...

Where is the list? I've looked online for the past few minutes and can't find anything.
Any college recommendations for someone applying for History?

I've narrowed it down to Trinity, Christ's, Clare, Emmanuel, Homerton, Gonville & Caius, Jesus, Pembroke....but I'm still open to others. Just definitely not Corpus Christi-- totally put off by the fact that 2nd and 3rd year rooms are based on academic results.

Good (en-suite if possible??) accommodation and facilities (not necessarily to do with sports, but I love a large library) would be the best. Small size is preferable but I really don't mind that much. As for location as long as it's not too far from my lectures I wouldn't mind.

Are any colleges harder to get into than others? I eliminated the colleges doing a test at interview first =P

There's no en suite accomodation at Emma for the first year - I'm not sure how much there is for subsequent years. The accomodation is far from slummy, but if you really want en suite you should probably strike Emmanuel off the list. Which is a shame, because it's awesome in every way

Lol, no, I'm definitely not going to cross out Emmanuel just because it doesn't offer en-suite! It's just an ideal option. Please expand on the awesomeness?

At Peterhouse (not renownd for being a ferociously academic college) the ballot is determined by an elaborate formula that includes academic results, involvement in college sports and societies, and election to various positions on the JCR.

I should have thought that at Christ's this whole question would be rather less relevant because surely under-performing students are burned at the stake in First Court to the accompaniment of ritual chanting, while everyone else looks on from the library?

Hi guys,
I'm having a lot of trouble deciding on a college, and my tutor's pushing me to make a decision!
Ideally I'd like:

Fairly large college
Old/pretty
Central
Don't mind if it has a snobby reputation
Not really elite
Gym preferably!
Would love to be on the backs or with some grounds - bit of a country girl me!

Thanks a lot.

Oh, I'm going up to Cambridge on Friday to look around - any advice about how to go about it?

What list? Do you mean the one for best parties in the world? It was featured in Time Magazine as far as I know.

Fairly large and central colleges on the backs are: St John's, Trinity, Queens.
Slightly smaller but by the river: King's, Trinity Hall, Clare, Magdalen.
Other pretty central colleges: Emmanuel, Gonville & Caius, Peterhouse, St Catherine's, Pembroke, Downing, Sidney Sussex, Christs's Corpus Christi. But all colleges are pretty close to the town, and the more central a college is, the more likely it is to attract troublesome tourists!

Not really elite? It is Cambridge! But if this is what you're looking for perhaps avoid some of the colleges which top the Tompkins table. If you really want a college with lots of grounds, then those which are less central will probably be better at fulfilling this than the more central colleges.

To be honest, most of what I think is great about it stems from my personal opinion and preferences. I absolutely fell in love with the place when I walked in - whereas in other colleges I'd felt a little overwhelmed and kind of hemmed in, Emma just seemed really open and friendly. It's got a kind of calmness in its atmosphere despite being right next to a busy road and I felt at home walking round it, rather than like a tourist. I made my college choice based on an instinctive liking of the place, rather than any criteria. In narrowing down the colleges I wanted to look at I did think about things like college size and location and so on, but ultimately just went with the one that I thought I'd like to live in. That's probably the best way to choose!

Yes, I was referring to the Time Magazine list...but I still can't find it. Obviously it's not the most important search in the world, but I am curious.

Went to Cambs today with my dad (live about 30mins away) to go to Kettle's Yard, but he was doing his tour guide thing  (he used to be asst. catering manager at Kings or something) trying to convince me not to go to Warwick mostly I think :p:, where actually he's also worked but I don't think he was that impressed.

The worrying think though is that I managed to walk right past Peterhouse twice without noticing :dontknow:

Yeah, well, tbh as long as you apply to Cam you can experience what I'm sure is the awesomeness of May Week!:yep:

Surely that's a good thing, means less tourists! Seriously though, the pomp/grandiosity of Cambridge college buildings shouldn't be the most important factor, and Peterhouse I'm sure is very pretty. If I'm honest, while King's is very nice, and it's synonymous with Cam, I think the Chapel though amazing for it's architecture is a little excessive. Still absolutely lovely though:smile:
