Surely that's a good thing, means less tourists! Seriously though, the pomp/grandiosity of Cambridge college buildings shouldn't be the most important factor, and Peterhouse I'm sure is very pretty. If I'm honest, while King's is very nice, and it's synonymous with Cam, I think the Chapel though amazing for it's architecture is a little excessive. Still absolutely lovely though:smile:

Less tourists yes, but I literally walked right PAST it (although on the opposite side of the street :p: ) King's is incredibly architecturally though, however to be honest I think EVERYwhere in cambridge is incredible, and I live there

Ah yes, It is very easy to walk past the colleges without the big giant entrances which places like King's and Trinity have. Those with just the lovely old wooden doors aren't so obvious, I found that when I was looking for Pembroke that I almost missed it. Anyway, you're not applying there because it's easy to find, so don't worry. Unless you like a college more than Peterhouse then applying there was a very good choice:yep:

I've narrowed it down to Trinity, Christ's, Clare, Emmanuel, Homerton, Gonville & Caius, Jesus, Pembroke....but I'm still open to others. Just definitely not Corpus Christi-- totally put off by the fact that 2nd and 3rd year rooms are based on academic results.

Okay, I'm going to correct what seems to be a misconception here:

In Corpus, 2nd and 3rd year rooms are largely NOT based on academic results (though I can see how people think that, given what's written in the alternative prospectus!).

Instead, it's mainly based on a random ballot order - you get given a ballot order when choosing your 2nd year room, which then gets reversed for when you're choosing your 3rd year room - with everyone choosing in turn. This is completely unrelated to academic results.

But at the same time, college reserves a small number of rooms as "prize rooms", which you can get if you get a first in your exams, usually at a much reduced rent. But this really only affects a small number of people (and not everyone who gets a first wants a prize room, especially if they really like the room they picked from the normal ballot!).

Thus, overall, the rooms on Corpus for 2nd and 3rd years (and also 4th years) are mainly unrelated to academic results! So don't let this put you off applying to Corpus...

(I'm also going to add that Corpus has pretty good accommodation, with the added bonus that no undergrads live further than a 7 minute walk from the main college site - so very, very convenient. And Newnham House (where a lot of Corpus 2nd years live, and some 3rd/4th years) is directly opposite Sidgwick Site, which is where I think the History department is...?)

Hi guys, I want to study Electrical and Electronics Eng and I dont know which college to choose. Apparently, I really need financial aid for my study. I heard from my friends that Trinity college is a good choice, is it right?

Hey I'm applying for maths and finding it really hard to choose between Jesus and King's. I've put Jesus on my UCAS but i haven't sent it off yet (ps needs tweaking) but i keep changing my mind. I know everyone says to ignore the statistics about how many applicants there are per place, but I got put off by King's high popularity. any help is appreciated
Hello everyone!

I am applying to do Geography and was wondering if anyone has any reccommendations for which college to pick?

Here are my (sort of preferences)...

-Interested in sport, sport grounds relatively near.
-Friendly,open atmosphere, as opposed to very formal and very academic.
-Good application statistics.
-A tutor interested in human geography (re-development studies)
-Good accommodation (single, ensuite rooms )
-Looking for well-rounded students.

I have looked at all of the college websites and statistics and was interested in Robinson/New Hall/Sidney Sussex (although this one seems very competative for geography)
Thank you for any help or guidance

St. cats has an excellent reputation for geography if that helps. But it may be harder to get in to for that subject.

Thanks, I might really consider Corpus then!

Incidentally, are there any colleges that are harder to get in for History? Or is there not really much of a difference?

I should have thought that at Christ's this whole question would be rather less relevant because surely under-performing students are burned at the stake in First Court to the accompaniment of ritual chanting, while everyone else looks on from the library?

In first court?!? God, no, think of the lawn!
Thanks, I was wondering, which is the most sporty college?

Does being at Christ's severely inhibit your free time, more so than any other college?

The facilities in colleges vary, but possibly Jesus?

Thinking about Selwyn, but I've got the impression it's really small :s-smilie: Thoughts?

It's probably one of the smaller ones, but that does have it's pro's. Means there's probably more of a community atmoshpere in each year group, and that you can get to know people more in your year group than in a larger college. Plus there's less anonymity than at a larger college, all depends on what you want really. But even if it's small size doesn't appeal you can just go out and make friends at other colleges too!
I'm applying for law and I'm choosing between Downing and Queen's.

I know Downing is known for being the "law college". Does that mean it is more difficult to be accepted there?
I'm applying to Downing for medicine

Its official now i've registered for the BMAT!!!
I have a mate who's also applying for Cambridge, who tells me that to go to St Johns, I'd have to be posh and rich. I thought it was Trinity that had that sort of reputation or is he right, and there'd be a certain amount of resentment if I applied to St Johns?

What does your mate know about different Cambridge colleges if he doesn't even go himself? :s-smilie:

Anyway if that was really the case I'd probably have applied there just to be annoying.

Edit: If only I could still edit my choices :frown:

That's rubbish, I'm applying there and I'm neither posh nor rich, so don't worry. Some colleges have reputations like that but that doesn't mean you have to be like that to get in!

Is Jesus one of the traditionally, hideously popular colleges? I have no idea where to apply, and I like the name.
