Thank you for your answer. I am applying for the Master of Law (LLM) for the academic year 2013-14. Ideally I would like to have my own room including my own toilet/shower in a college located near the Faculty of Law (although the distance isn't really a great matter to me). Price really is a matter to me. What are the cheapest colleges? Plus I don't really know what MCR is... :/ - Im such a newbie- I think that it is better to apply for a college where electricity/heat are included in rent. What do you think about that?
Plus I wanted to ask if the college fees are the same for all colleges.
And finally, can I somehow assure that I will have my own toilet? When applying I only choose the college, when can I state that I want an ensuite room?

Robinson College is a 5/6 minute walk to the law faculty and 15 minutes from the centre of town. It also has really nice new ensuite graduate accommodation on site and there's a lot of it.
However it is not one of the cheaper colleges accommodation wise even though it does include the electricity, heat and kitchen costs in the a single termly rent rate.
MCR stands for middle common room. All of the masters students will be part of their college mcr.
It also looks very bricky. It's not one of the older colleges.

I've been researching Cambridge colleges and trying to choose the best one for me. I'm going to study Geography, and the main things I'm considering are: location (close to the centre of Cambridge/Geography department), aesthetics and accommodation (I want to like the look of the buildings, which is why I'm inclined to the older colleges).

I'm not sure about size—would Trinity too big to be cosy/have a tight-knit college feel?

I'm considering Clare, Corpus Christi, Downing, Emmanuel, King's, St Catharine's and Trinity at the moment. How much can you tell me about each if these? Thanks a million!

Geography, excellent choice! I'm looking to apply to Emmanuel, St. Catz or Queen's based on the friendly reputations and relative proximity to the department. I've heard Trinity isn't so friendly and is far too big to be cosy, but some people thrive in those situation. Just visit the ones you want, the decision will probably be completely irrational!

Hey again.. What do you think of Wolfson college? Seems to be near the faculty of law while it has no hidden costs and the rents seem reasonable.. I got a little confused though when I read the following:

"Price 3 rooms are small single study bedrooms with en‐suite bathroom facilities; or a small shared set
(two study bedrooms sharing bathroom facilities and a kitchen, this being the price per study
bedroom); or standard single study bedrooms in the houses."

Does that mean that I may be sharing the bathroom with another random person? Or does it apply to couples etc?

Plus I was wondering if the college fees for graduate students are pretty much the same for all colleges (about 2.100-2.300 GBP).
Thanks again for all the help

I can't comment on Wolfson since I don't know much about it, but I can explain the concept of "sets".

You were right with your first guess - if the set is numbered as room "1a/1b", you'll be in one of those bedrooms and there'll be a bathroom and kitchen for the exclusive use of those living in the set (so it'll probably be behind the oak - that's certainly the case at my college).

Chances are it will be a randomer you're sharing with - in my case, my best friend and I agreed to live in a set, so we both "independently" selected adjacent rooms (i.e. we didn't tell the college that we're friends, if you see what I mean). I'd imagine that it could be someone of the opposite sex too, but it's not that big a deal - after all, you're still sharing with fewer people than if you used a communal bathroom!

Peterhouse is the smallest college, I don't think it does fantastically in sports just because the pool of talent is so small. But then I'm told that means it's really easy to get on a team too.

oh right, does that mean it will lack having certain teams? or have so few people it is not worthwhile?

I imagine they'll put out a full team for everything, it's just that they probably won't be very good. Maybe they would have a joint team with another college if they couldn't find enough people.

Here I am again with another question...
I would like to ask if it is possible to host guests in your room (e.g. if I want another person to stay in the room with me without paying is it possible to do so without being caught? because I know it's forbidden... but can it actually be done or do they check your room every day and stuff?)

Thank you once more

Occasionally yes, although I wouldn't say forbidden - different colleges' policies differ, like some forbid it but some allows you provided you register the guest in a book. However nobody observes the rules really with regards to guest in rooms (how else can they pull after a night out? ), even if bedders sometimes report it if they see strangers.

which colleges allow a guest provided I register them in a book? i'm sorry for flooding the thread with questions all the time...! :s-smilie:

Christ's and Caius definitely do. Not that anyone actually does it but I know that's their policy. (I certainly never did it...)

hah thanks! its nice to know that its easy to bring a guest in ... if I make it as a grad-student there I wish to have some friends visit me  thanks for all the answers!

So does Emmanuel. Select a shortlist of colleges first by other factors and if you are bothered by it email your shortlist and see what their responses are.

Wait, you are a grad student? In that case it's probably more lax if you happen to live out of college.

hm... yes... I just finished my degree in Law and I intend to apply for the LLM programme... Shouldn't I live in a college? I really liked Robinson college -although the rents weren't as cheap as I was hoping for..-. Now I'm looking for a second college to choose on my application, I need to have cheap ensuite rooms for postgrads.. I liked Selwyn but I read that the building where this college houses grad-students is kind of ugly and doesnt include ensuite rooms. Ideally I want something ensuite, as cheap as possible and not too far away from the faculty of law... any suggestions?

Does John's really have a higher proportion of toffs than somewhere like Emmanuel, or are the stereotypes completely unfounded?

There are plenty of toffs at Emmanuel :dontknow: I think it's unfounded and even if it was somewhat true it won't be that much worse.

any suggestions for the cheapest ensuite (except for Robinson college) ? I'm a grad student.
i liked wolfosn but it says: Price 3 rooms are standard single study bedrooms with en‐suite bathroom facilities; or a standardshared set (two study bedrooms sharing bathroom facilities and a kitchen, this being the price per
study bedroom); or standard single study bedrooms in the houses.

Is there a way to guarantee that I'll get an ensuite?
Any other suggestions about other colleges?
im a grad student
plus another important factor!! can i be charged only for the 10 months i'll be staying there or is it necessary to pay for the whole year? if so it soo sucks!

Don't know much about graduate accommodation or Robinson, sorry.

Erm, really? You must have quite a lax definition of "Toff", I could only name a couple in my year, and then they're not really what you'd classify as a proper "Toff"

Going from what is becoming a steadily quite sizeable cross-section of Johns it's not unfounded, and quite a lot worse than Emmanuel. Unless I've literally met every Toff from Johns.
