Downing is supposedly the college for law.

Right, so I'm applying for PPS, from Sweden, and am looking for a cozy college with a good mix of people from many different countries with different backgrounds. Lately I've been looking at St Catherine's and Magdalene as options but I can't really decide between them.

I want to avoid claustrophobia but still be somewhere where you are acquainted with most of the people, would Magdalene be better since the grounds there seem more spread out than Catherine's are?

A big factor is that accomodation is quite must be cheap, 50-60/w preferable. By the way, are the rent figures in the alternative prospectus reliable sources to go on?

Am I right in assuming that the societies of your own college are not so important since you can still join any general versity society?

I haven't been to Cambridge and won't have the opportunity to go there before the interviews.

Thanks for any help, even though I'll probably have to flip for it in the end.
hi everybody, I'm Italian and I am applying to study land economy. I don't know which college I'll apply to yet, I just can't make up my mind between Jesus and Trinity. I know both of them are extremely popular and competitive, but after considering a long series of factors (size, entry tests, location and others) they appear to be the colleges right colleges for me. I want a big college and I want to maximize my chances of getting in. This would suggest choosing a not so popular college, but I don't want to submit any school essays (I attend an Italians school and it would be tricky) and I want a college which selects candidates on a bigger basis than interview only (i.e. preparatory study at interview and TSA).
Still I don't know which of the two...

Trinity pros:
- really big
- international environment
- preparatory study at interview (so I have somewhere where so start from)
- good location

Trinity cons:
- incredibly competitive and popular

Jesus pros:
- Preparatory study at interview + TSA (I have sat other standardized critical thinking tests and I have done pretty well)
- good location
- less popular than Trinity

Jesus cons:
- TSA (should I perform badly it would ruin my chances of getting in)
- smaller college (but this doesn't matter too much because it is still medium size)

I'm just really confused, but at the moment I'm seriously thinking of Jesus. What would you advice, mostly with regard to the admission policy?
Thank you!!!

Pick the college you like the best. Also you have said a con of Trinity is its good location and that a pro for Jesus is its good location

Basically if you want to apply to Trinity, but are being put off by its popularity, I would still go for it. Pick the college that you want to, and don't bother playing the statistical game
It could be lupus

oh, thank you I didnt notice, I'll edit the post...it was a mistake of course. Trinity is better located than Jesus imo!! :yep:

What are you second thinking about Jesus?

I am looking to study Law - Good choice.. I guess the main thing on this front is whether you would prefer a large cohort of lawyers in your college, or small, or whether you have any preference at all.
I am from West Yorkshire (I have the furthest thing from a posh accent) -this won't matter!
I prefer sports (specifically football, hockey, basketball, badminton) - Larger colleges will probably have more choice of team, if you don't want to play/do anything with complete beginners/seasoned pros. But saying that, the mixed ability college teams are a laugh, and if you want to play sport 'properly' there's university teams which don't care about your college.
I'm no good at music or drama although I will do anything for a laugh - Most colleges will have something to cater for this, as will many uni-wide societies. I know my college [magdalene] puts on a musical every year, which is open to anyone from any college regardless of ability to sing/dance. Makes for a good show..
I would prefer a college with a decent social scene as I live by the motto work hard, play hard.- The social scene is largely what you make of it! working hard and playing hard happens at all colleges :yep:
I would prefer a college that is open minded with a LGBT society - I haven't come across any close-minded colleges yet. And every college has a LGBT group [some more formal than others], with a LGBT rep [either officially appointed by the jcr, or by cusu lbgt].
thank you. this is why even though it would be logical taking the popularity of the college into account, i still want to apply to a highly popular and competitive college [ie either trinity or jesus].

Thank you. Your reply has been helpful.

Looking at colleges at Durham some are very traditional and formal whereas others are more relaxed and prefer fancy dress to formal dinners. Are there any like this at Cambridge?
Could anyone tell me how international St John's College is?

I want to apply for PPS and I'm torn between the followings:
King's-they take many students on this subject(essay,TSA)
Trinity Hall-(+short essay on a topic)
Selwyn-(+essay)
Emmanuel(essay, preparatory study for interview-is it really an advantage?)

At King's I am a little bit scared about the TSA ,how much does it count for the final decision and how hard is it?
At Trinity ,I must send the essay before interview or write it on the interview day like some kind of a test?
At which one is it more likely to be offered a place?

I am not really interested in sports,I would like to take part actively in societies,I want the college to have cheap accommodation, kitchen for cooking facilities, nice events with good music and dance, friendly atmosphere, international students(I'm not from UK),ability to maybe help me with finance.
What's your advice?Which one do you think I should choose?

Thank you very much!:hugs:
TSA is really easy =],
oh and go for selwyn =]
From what I gather, Emmanuel is good on the finance side of things.
TSA is not a significant part of the application at all, the evidence suggests that it is a terrible indication of exam performance. It's still being modified and tested.

Just apply to whichever college you prefer, it's not an important decision.
If you care about access to reasonable cooking facilities that will probably sort it for you.

Out of those I would go for Newnham! It has the most beautiful gardens. Although all of those 4 colleges have nice nature, I think Newnham is the prettiest and the nicest. I don't know what it's like for economics though. If they have their own DoS (not an external one), then that's a good sign...
Newnham library is also really pretty!

Trinity Hall is my favourite college of this bunch, and I'd choose Selwyn after that of those.
However, for PPS in particular, Kings is really worth considering because they have a really organised DoS who somehow organises things so that they only have to write one essay a week in first year :hmpf: I assume it means that they have to write more essays during their holidays or something, but everybody else in the University have two to three essays a week in first year, so you can imagine this makes quite a difference!

At which one is it more likely to be offered a place?

None. Cambridge doesn't work like that. Ignore what people tell you.

No it wasn't :hmpf:

Statistically which cambridge college would be "safest" in terms of getting an offer as an international student for economics as i heard there are certain quotas (state/indep/intl etc...)
PLEASE HELP :frown:
there aren't and besides you can find this information out on the cambridge website http://www.cam.ac.uk/admissions/undergraduate/statistics/ but take it with a pinch of salt as it does not give the whole picture about how competitive it is to get into a certain college as there are many other factors
