Never mind. :p:

It's good to see you still around, as a fellow MML reject. :ninja:

I would like to study medicine and one of the uni's I would love to go to is cambridge. I was wandering if any of you have suggestions, from personal experience or what have you, for the kind of college that would suit me  first of all i would like an academically challenging one as would anyone but other things about me are: I love music and play the violin and sing so would like a college with a good orchestra/choir. I also do triathlon along with playing tennis/rugby socially so i would most enjoy a college that would be good for playing these sports if not competitively. I think i would enjoy an older college for the looks, history and general feel and definitely one with a good social scene.

Thank you for the help,

Thomas

If you play reasonably seriously (grade 7/8) then you'll probably be more interested in one of the university orchestras: CUMSI/CUMSII (both run by the Cambridge University Musical Society), CUSO or UCPO. College orchestras tend to be a lot less formal, and therefore typically of a lesser standard. I think many college orchestras just have a few days of intense rehearsals before the concert. However, being in a bigger college means there are more opportunities to organize something yourself and a better chance of being able to put together a string quartet, for example.

From your post, you want one of the big old colleges, but that doesn't narrow it down a lot. Trinity, King's, Queens', Downing, Emma, Caius, Jesus...

Thank you so much everyone, you have given me so much to work with
Is there a guide for each of the Cambridge colleges on TSR? I know there's one for Oxford.
I'm looking for a central college, older and with good English tutors - any thoughts?

Yes, there are links to the college pages from the Cambridge page on the wiki, here: http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/wiki/University_of_Cambridge

As for central and older, you're looking at Trinity, King's, Queens', Downing, Emma, Caius, Jesus, Clare, Peterhouse, Catz, Pembroke, Christ's, Corpus, Trinity Hall, Sidney Sussex, Magdalene or Johns.
Hey!

Well, I am thinking of studying law at cambridge starting in 2011. I already did some research on most of the colleges, but I just can't decide which one is the best for me
So here's a list of what I am looking for in a college:
medium sized
rather old than new
located in the city center
accomodation within the college grounds for all 3 years
some colleges ask for further essays to be handed in when applying and since I live in Austria, I don't really have many english school essays --> so I rather don't apply to any of those colleges
:eek3:
Which colleges would you recommend to me? I am desperate for help!

Could anyone give me some advise about the Cambridge Law Test? Are there any specimen questions - apart from those on the law departement website - and is it even possible to prepare for the test anyhow?

Lots of questions I know

nope but I have an offer to study there next year. I don't know a lot about it but from what I have seen, it is pretty central. It's not massive but not small either.

Also sounds a lot like Christ's.
Medium-sized college which is great for not feeling anonymous but at the same time, being able to know a lot of people.
It's bang in the middle of the centre which is good for shopping and going out.
It's 505 years old at the mo (hope that's old enough )
It's possible to live within college for all 3 years. There's a possibility you will be outside the grounds but in college accomodation in 2nd year as some students have to. The walk to this housing will be roughly 2 mins so not overly taxing
They don't ask for essays for law, so far as i'm aware. I didn't have to hand any in and i don't think this year's applicants had to either.

Other colleges you could look at: Jesus, Pembroke, Downing (excellent for law), Corpus, Emmanuel. I don't know so much about those though...
Thanks a lot for your help. So now I have to decide between Christ's and Queen's. I'll go to Cambridge for the Open Day in July anyway and have a look at both of the colleges.

Did anyone of you do the Cambridge Law Test? If yes, how did you prepare yourself for it?

Those were the two colleges I had to decide between. Both colleges are quite intimate and varied in terms of architecture, however, Queens seemed like it had a more sociable environment - it has a great bar, and the whole design of the place seems to lend itself to communal living (the cripps court, the massive dining room, the theatre etc). This is in contrast (imo) to Christs, which is renowned for pushing its students very hard - its one of the only colleges to have a 24/7 library.

In terms of activities, Queens is much better for sports (im pretty sure this is true), but its also better for drama and maybe music. If you're in to art, the artist in resisdence at Christs might appeal to you...
Ha ha, Christ's is renowned for being for hard-working people but, trust me, it's not 100% true; i know a lot of lax people (me included) and, indeed, us fresher lawyers probably don't put as much effort in as we should (especially judging from my essay comments which said i was good, right until i left out one of the most important considerations which made the whole thing lose a grade) (have been kicking myself since i read the comments because now he's said it, it's obvious i should have considered it). 24/7 library doesn't mean you have to use it - i know people who never go in there. It's also useful if you have an essay crisis
It's also pretty sociable. If you're into clubbing etc, you'll nearly always find someone to join you. If you don't like that sort of stuff, you'll find people to just hang with in the bar, JCR etc.

Queens is better for sports i think, but we're pretty good for music too!

In reality, you will almost certainly like whichever college you pick. I know people who picked Christ's because it happened to be first in the prospectus. There's a lot to be said for random picking! (Also, as i said, you could look at ones like Corpus, Pembroke, Emma etc)

Yeah, I probably painted an overly biased picture - I really almost chose Christ's, its really nice (and the DOS for anthropology has really interesting specialities)! In the end, Queens' just felt right for me :yep:

Hmm, i hear mixed things about this DoS - a formidable person, apparently. Not that i would know because i know who the grand total of 3 fellows are in Christ's. Even my DoS doesn't go to Christ's!

All i can really say about Queen's is they beat us in our badminton match (so if you like badminton, T-o dore, you're probably onto a winner there:yep: ). But, as i said, at the end of the day you will probably like whichever college you end up at.

Oh, if you like excellent food, don't go to Christ's; the only colleges worse than us, as far as i'm aware, are Peterhouse and Caius.
Thanks for all the information. I am pretty sure I'll be happy in both, Queen's and Christ's, but for a start I have to make it into University.

Isn't it much better to live in a smaller college like Christ's (500 students) than in one of the biggest colleges like Queen's (850 students)?

Do you know whether it's possible to stay overnight in one of those two colleges at an open day?

Depends what you prefer.
Small - medium college, e.g. Christ's
Pros = People will almost certainly know you, you don't feel anonymous, feels more tight-knit
Cons = People do form groups and if you don't manage to get in one, you can feel left out. Smaller range of people you can meet

Larger college, e.g. Queen's
Pros = Better chance of making friends because so many people to know. Possibly better facilities because catering for more people.
Cons = Can easily feel anonymous and not involved with college life.

It may well be possible to stay overnight, though i can't confirm it. Colleges tend to have guest rooms. Send the college an e-mail and ask. If not, there are hotels around the place

Here's the factor that'll sway your decision. Christ's has a bit of a reputation of all work and no play (I doubt this is entirely true though!), whilst Queens' is said to have some of the best ents! What would you prefer?

To be fair, staying over a night might be a good idea!
