Revolution is my Name
It wouldn't matter; I'm sure the admissions tutors would feel sufficiently sorry for you having been given a boy's name that they'd give you an offer out of pity either way.

Ha, I'm not talking about myself

Actually, "Jack" is my cousin

The thing is, my cousin has a really strong passion for both and after looking at the courses in depth, she's still unsure on which to apply for :/

Flip a coin. Switching between subjects at the start of year is not unheard of.

edit: blah listen to your heart blah pick whatever you enjoy best blah it's a lot of work doing a subject you don't like blah

If "Jack" had a strong passion for both then surely he'd be capable of getting on to either course. Playing the numbers game is foolish. "Jack" should go for the course that appeals to him more and to find this out "Jack" should read around the subject and look at how the university teaches it and possibly try and ask current students doing either course on their thoughts on the course. Simples!

I think PPS is a far more varied course (duh!) whereas Lit. is likely to have less variation but I know very little about both courses!

But, as I've said, "Jack" finds both courses equally appealing ...

Then "Jack" should forget about Cambridge and find some joint honours course elsewhere. That is the only solution if "Jack" genuinely finds both courses equally appealing. I'll say it again - don't decide to apply for a course just because you think it's easier to get on to. You'll most probably regret it.

Anyone for Catz Geography?
I'm looking at an application at Cambridge, exploring possible college options. Do you guys know any Tory colleges? or colleges that can be associated with many conservative societies. thanks!
Rofl. Imagine the outrage if there was a Tory-only college in Cambridge.

OP: Colleges do not select on political preference. Neither do the supposed reputations of colleges cause a vast learning either way. There is a Cambridge Conservatives society, but it is uni-wide and by no means college restricted.

EDIT: The Lib Dems won the Cambridge constituency, by the way.
Peterhouse has the stereotype
Johns and Trinity?

Basically avoid Kings and you'll be fine
It's seems a bit of an irony to me that King's College Cambridge has become associated with the left wing when it was originally created for students from Eton, to be the grandest college at either Oxford or Cambridge.

I think it may have been due to the fact that there were a couple of Communist sympathisers/spies there during the Cold War. Not that it really reflects on the college as a whole.

You'll be able to join CUCA (Conservative Association) wherever you go. Peterhouse is the stereotyped Tory one.

Isn't one of the central ones (Pembroke/Corpus Christi) meant to be quite conservative?

and OP: expect to be in a minority wherever you are.

Why on earth would you want to join a college solely populated by people who think just like you do? Surely it is preferable to have your beliefs challenged and being made to justify them? It would certainly make you better prepared for a career in politics if that's your ambition.

Also, it is perfectly possible for right wing people to be friends with left wing people, there is no need to isolate yourself in a political society of any party.

Caius - Tory central. CUCA chairman this term is a caian.

Hi, I'm thinking about English at Cambridge, and was wondering if anybody could give me any advice as to which college I should apply for.

I'd prefer somewhere with good English tutors, close to a library, medium-large sized, good social life and an active music/drama scene (I play the flute and would love to join a drama society). Any suggestions?

Pembroke! It has a *fantastic* reputation for English, it's medium-sized and central and it has an active drama society (the Pembroke Players). You should also look at Clare.

Upper-class guilt?

When you said Tory college I thought Caius, but there you go. But don't select a college based on its perceived political allegiance, it's really not worth it... you'll find plenty of people to agree and disagree with at every college. On top of that, most political stuff happens on a university level rather than a collegiate level, e.g. at the Union, various political societies/clubs, and so on. If you end up in a college you don't like that much because you think more people there will be Conservative supporters, you'll regret it.
