Student finance opens this February. Here is what you need to know to get your application started.

1. You can apply to Student Finance England for a loan to cover your tuition fees and a maintenance loan to cover living costs such as accommodation, food, travel and course materials.

2. Your university or college sets your tuition fee, and this loan is paid directly to them. The maintenance loan is paid directly into your bank account at the start of each term. You have to pay both the loans back, payments will start once you earn over £25,725. Find out more information here about loan repayment.

3. Although you will need to know the institution you are studying at you do not need a confirmed place to apply for student finance - just remember if you then change university through clearing you will need to update your application

4. Make sure you have your valid UK passport details and your National Insurance number to hand as you will need to input these the first time you apply.

Your application can take up to 6 weeks to be processed so make sure you apply far enough in advance to avoid not receiving your money in time for when you start your studies.

If you want to pick up some student habits, have a read of this Hallam Insider student blog, to help you be savvy with your money.
