Is that 10^2 or .... in the answer?

9.75*10^5 - 2.3*10^5 = 7.45*10^?

Where have you gotten the 10^2 from?
it should be 10^5...
Ive literally no idea how you have lost a factor of 1000. If your unsure you could always factorise 10^5 out...

If you move decimal place 2 times from 7.45 it's 2 so it's 10^2 right?

No. I'm not sure what you're saying

9.75*10^5 - 2.3*10^5 =
975000 - 230000 = 745000
which in standard notation is ....

Nearly. They talk about the time for the trip which probably means you double the distance to account for both legs of the journey..
