I cannot claim to have ever truly loved someone in a romantic sense. However, I think it is good for love to make you hurt a bit in the sense that you should miss them when they are not there or hurt if someone hurt them. On the other hand, excessive pain is not conducive to a comfortable life and you shouldn’t long to the extent of being love-sick (we don’t need an Isabella or the Pot of Basil situation).

I agree with this. Loving someone doesn't me you should forget how to love yourself as well.
