its meant to be the safest city.

Yeah it's pretty safe i think, i've never really lived in a city before but you don't feel scared at night or anything.

Theres some areas you obviously wouldn't go, but you get that everywhere.

it's apparently got the lowest rate of muggings and stuff of any city in the uk, which has to be good, and theres so many students that nights out generally have a really friendly atmosphere.

It used to be quite bad in some areas, but it has got a lot better. It is better around Sheffield Hallam university than Sheffield University because Sheffield Hallam is nearer the Ecclesall area which is very nice  But in general, it is a safe city.
Low crime rates as far as I know. I walk to sheffield uni every day and have never had a problem. I've had cars stop some nights when I've been walking home from a night out though but they normally go if you carry on walking. (red light area is near sheffield uni so you do get pestered sometimes) but there is the night bus from sheffield uni which is v cheap and takes you to your door. They also give away free rape alarms from sheffield uni on freshers week so I carry mine around just in case.

RAPE ALARM ? :?:

according to the police everyone should have one.

they started giving them out at my school, seemed a bit wierd to me. where i used to live there hadn't been any violent crime in years.
Its always best to be safe and have a rape alarm. I have two one has a clip on it that you can clip to your belt and there is a pull chord that you pull out if you are being attacked, or a button you can push and it lets off an alarm, its pretty darned shrill I can tell you.
The one the uni gave me is a keyring size so very handy again with a pull out chord its not quite as loud but it'd catch someones attention. its better to be safe than sorry. Sheffield uni is really good for stuff like that. Theres a thing they give out that you can register your computer to so if it gets stolen and its connected to the net they can trace it. They also give out free pen things so you can mark up all your stuff with your security details. V. useful.

It's a precautionary thing. While Sheffield is a very safe city (supposedly the safest in the country), that doesn't mean that there's isn't any crime at all. But I know of very little and haven't personally affected by any. And the area around Uni is pretty decent and peaceful, especially Broomhill where the halls are.

Actually I don't think the Hallam area is any better than the area around Uni, because Hallam is also very close to Broomhall which is a bit of a dodgy area too (I know Uni's closeish to Broomhall, but most Uni people live in Broomhill/Crookes).

I walk around at night on my own frequently - in 2nd year my boyfriend lived just off Hunters Bar roundabout, I lived up in Crookes and I used to walk the 35 minutes down to his every night around 10ish, never had any trouble or felt unsafe. Having said that you do need to be aware of your possessions/safety in student areas - my house (Broomhill) has been burgled twice in 2 1/2 years living there. BUt that's a hazard of living in any studenty area in any city (thieves love student houses, break in and you've got 5 stereos, TV's, computers etc). I still think of Sheffield as a safe city and will continue to do so.

wow, thats pretty bad, did you have a burglar alarm?
:frown:

No...stupidly, after the first burglary we thought 'we couldn't possibly be unlucky enough for it to happen again'. however, after the second one (just a few weeks ago) we've realised that's not the case :frown: and one should be being fitted next week hopefully.

I walk through Broomhall every day but havent had a problem yet touch wood. Always carry a rape alarm though.
My halls were burgled last year but they were just grab thefts through open ground floor windows I think.

i think its pretty safe... i am another who has never lived in a city before (at home i live in a village) but i have not felt threatened so far. my house (annexe of stevo) has had a window smashed and laptop nicked but the guy was an idiot and took down his curtains, lives on bottom floor and left his laptop on the desk in front of the window. asking for trouble really. there are always isolated incidents like that in student areas though, thieves ikknow theres going to be expensive electrical equipment in there. the guy was lucky that they only grabbed it through the window from outside, if they had come in they would have also noticed a tv and a ps2. when out at night i always feel fine, im always with a large group of people and we get taxis q a lot of the time.
