saturated hydrocarbons have carbon to carbon single bonds such as alkanes
unsaturated hydrocarbons have carbon to carbon double bonds like alkenes

the test for saturation in hydrocarbon compounds is that is you place the hydrocarbon in bromine solution , the saturated hydrocarbon will slowly decolourise said solution but an unsaturated hydrocarbon will definitely decolourise the bromine solution from brown/orange to clear
