Unfortunately, I am one of the reps for my department (the other two are TAs, so don't care about this issue as much as I do). We don't have one central person who allocates teaching, it seems to be at the discretion of the module lecturers. I was thinking about skipping over my actual department and going to the student union in confidence. :beard:

Yeah the other thing I was thinking is you can/should go to the SU and have them sanction the Dept. or at the very least, make them create a fair system of allocating TA work :colone: I think that'd be a good move

I think all we really want is transparency: if the module lead thinks one of their PhD students is the best fit, surely they should get the job anyway on merit in an open advertised system regardless of who they know? It's also unfair if some academics use 'nepotism' to recruit while others insist on advertising. I'll see what the SU say, and hopefully they can do something without implicating anyone.

Most definitely. Good luck and good on you for looking out for fellow students. Transparency is important and it's not an unreasonable thing to expect to be already in place :hugs:

Did my first teaching of my PhD today! I managed to secure 4 seminars of teaching after another PhD student had to drop out of doing it, so I was very lucky! Apart from 20 minutes of technical issues, I feel like it went quite well (although it's always hard to tell when you're staring at 10 muted and camera-offed people!

Going through my first round of piloting, and participant recruitment has been painful! Seems like everyone and their mums has transferred their research (for undergrad dissertations etc.) into online surveys, so tons of groups/platforms/forums have banned surveys from being posted. Didn't get the number of responses I was aiming for (I'm only 3 short!), so if any of you know of any TSR users who are primary school teachers, let me know so I can DM them my survey! :emo:

Argh, that is really frustrating, I'm sorry :frown: Is there any other eligibility criteria for participation? Just asking coz I have at least one primary school teacher friend (not a TSR user, mind you) I could pass the survey onto if needed? You can PM me about it if that's easier

PMed you. It's something I never foresaw tbh, I thought I was safe because of the online nature of my research, not thinking that I'd have competition!

Yeah that must be sooooo frustrating. I'm still pissed off that some of the Facebook groups I work with won't let me post links to research questionnaires :sadnod: Makes everything much longer and more tedious :nopity:

Just had my first ever speaker invite to a conference! I've always had to apply to speak at events before, so it's nice to be 'head-hunted'

Passed my PhD probation this morning! Technically it should have been at the 1 year mark, but I started in January and all reviews are in June, so it's at the 1.5 year mark for me!

It was pretty hard - none of the questions that I was asked were things I'd prepared for, and they were pretty complex. Luckily they seemed happy with my answers!

Well done  Practice for the viva I guess!

In my Dept. people take their supervisors out for graduation meal with their family  I won't be doing that personally (my dad is v socially awkward, plus he doesn't like my supervisor) but I'd love for both my supervisors to be at my graduation ceremony if poss

Ahh I see my supervisor in person next week after over a year and half only on teams! I am very excited
