How is the PhD start going for you in regards to supervisor?

Congratulations, that's great news!

I am still waiting for the official "viva outcome letter" before submitting my corrections, but I hope to be done really soon ... All the bureaucracy is just so tiring.

No news on that front sadly. My supervisor's out-of-office email still says 'until at least 28th February' - whether it will be updated imminently to an even later date is anyone's guess, and may not have happened yet due to the strikes. I'm hoping if it hasn't updated by Friday that she'll actually return on 2nd March, although I don't know how high up in priority I'll be, given that she's missed 1.5 months of work (and she holds multiple roles in my school). Plus the strikes through a further spanner in the works.

I've actually hit a bit of a rhythm in terms of starting my reading and note-taking, so I don't feel quite so out of touch now. I just hope I'm doing the right kinds of things, and don't get told at our first meeting that I've wasted a month on the wrong tasks!

Just submitted a proposal to a Swiss conference happening in July - but at the rate that international conferences are being cancelled due to the coronavirus, it may not happen either way. :s-smilie:

:hugs: Yeah that happened to my sister. She was meant to present at a medical conference in Singapore in March. They've now rescheduled the conference for December :s-smilie:

My Twitter is awash with announcements from all over the place - Singapore, Japan, Sicily etc.

I'm also applying for a grant to go, and if the conference gets rescheduled, I won't necessarily be able to use the funding if I get awarded it (as I have to use it by the end of September). :indiff:

Oh **** bout potentially not being able to use the funding :frown: Everything crossed for you that the conference is able to go ahead, or at least doesn't get rescheduled too far back

Just had to complete the grant form with itemised costings... Switzerland isn't cheap to visit. :emo:

Fingers crossed for your conference! I just travelled across Europe back to work after a nice week with the husband, and at the airport we were all asked whether we had been in any "risk areas", and those who were got checked extra for symptoms of the virus. Seeing as I've been fighting a common cold ever since my viva, I tried very hard not to cough while waiting for my turn in line. At the uni where I'm teaching, three staff members of the university hospital have been diagnosed, and a few hundred are in quarantaine, so it is hitting pretty close to home now. I hope it doesn't spread any further as I've got a number of flights across Europe coming up, and can't afford to lose the income or the bookings.

My supervisor has returned! Instead of being away for 2 weeks as initially predicted, she was away for 2 months. Unfortunately I can't go to campus now, as she returned just in time for UK lock down! Luckily I'm already working from home, so can just continue as is for now.

Has anyone been negatively affected in terms of their PhD thus far? Does anyone foresee any issues in the near future?
