Wikipedia will tell you area and population sizes.

Isnt machester the second largest city in the uk?
About the same size as Liverpool I would have thought - but then do you mean population or area, and do you mean including the greater area of the city or just the specific city ignoring surrounding settlements?

No

Leeds city centre is a fair bit smaller than Manchester city centre, but Leeds as a city is generally more condensed (most of the centrey stuff is actually around the centre and near each other, where Manchester is quite spread apart).

Leeds is a lot nicer than Manchester, though, by any standards.

My PhD deals with these things so i'm well placed to, er, agree with Planto.

Essentially Manchester is the centre of a populous metropolitan area that includes fairly large satellite towns such as Wigan, Oldham, Bury, Stockport, etc. It's a much bigger city overall and the centre is also about twice as large as Leeds', and Liverpool's is probably slightly bigger as well. Both those cities also have more of a metropolitan size and scale (beacuse the buildings are generally five and six storeys compared to Leeds' four).
However, Leeds' compactness makes it easy to negotiate without becoming overwhelmed by the distances required to get from oine part of town to another and is therefore very good for students. It also has, imo, more pleasant feeling pedestrianised areas than Manchester which, despite having more of a 'big city feel', doesn't have a focal point on a par with Briggate (Leeds' main shopping street).
Leeds is smaller, but it isn't like Basingstoke. It feels like a city.

Leeds is the 5th biggest city, after London, Manchester, Birmingham, Sheffield. Although Leeds has a much bigger centre than Sheffield.

Leeds city centre itself is pretty small. Don't worry about total area, population, all of that: if you're a student you need to know Otely Road, Headingley, Hyde Park, the universities and the city centre, and that's about it. I'm sure there's huge areas of Leeds I'll never go to, because I don't need to.
