I currently have a confirmed place to go and study Linguistics at the University of York in September but recently I’ve been thinking how incredible it would be to study a MFL. I’d want to study German as I’ve studied it before and really enjoyed the language but unfortunately subjects clashing at GCSE meant I don’t actually have any qualifications in it!

Ab initio seems perfect for me as everyone will be starting from scratch but it does scare me the idea of actually going ahead and studying for a degree in a language I only know a few sentences of. I just wanted to know what others people’s experiences are of ab initio degrees, especially if you haven’t studied languages since you were quite young? Did you become mostly fluent? Is the degree worth it? What were exams like?
