I was a counselor at a US summer camp for two years (went with Camp America first time around and then BUNAC because they did a better deal for returners). It's a fantastic experience but you should be prepared for a lot of hard work - it's definitely not a two-month holiday. I was a lifeguard, swimming teacher and cabin counselor rolled into one (at my camp almost everyone is a cabin counselor as well as a specialist, but it works differently at every camp), so I worked at the waterfront for most of the day while my campers went around to different activities, then I was responsible for them at mealtimes and overnight. I had such a great time and I wish I could have had another summer at camp, but the 'real world' got in the way.
American kids are like any others - I had the occasional bratty child but most of them were lovely. You should be prepared for fairly basic living conditions and not a great deal of time off, but if you love working with kids and are enthusiastic and committed then you'll have a brilliant time. It's worth thinking about a few things before you apply:
- what special skills do you have to offer?
- would you rather be an activity specialist or spend the whole time with your cabin?
- what sort of camp would you prefer to work at? (eg scouts/guides, private traditional camp, special needs, full summer vs one-week sessions etc etc)
