Solving pastpaper

To those self-studying AS level economics at home . how do you effectively correct your past paper ?I will be doing 9708 this upcoming May session .However due to the way Mark Scheme is written I am finding it hard to actually make progress .I am also doing other subjects but so far I seem to be only struggling with econ.I am aware that the format of Mark Scheme(i.e what should the answer contain ) is normal for essay-based subjects but i'm hoping for any suggestions .Thank you!
