What's my UK residency status?

If my pasport is from Nigeria but I have a permanent residence permit in Spain, am I a national of a European Union member state? Because if I answer yes, the next question is when did I move to the UK and I haven't been there yet.

Hello,

Unfortunately, we can't count your permanent residency in another country as being classed as an EU national unless you have an EU passport or identity card.

As an EU national, you then have the following options to check your eligibility if you're looking for undergraduate funding:

EU Funding Full Time - http://ow.ly/eMQm30p9Jkk
EU Funding Part Time - http://ow.ly/wzk330p9Jnu

Hi Dean,
Does that mean that I can't apply for a Student loan and that I have to pay the overseas students fee?

Hello Angela,

It will be up to the university what fee you will need to pay, but yes that's likely correct given your current situation.

Do you have any EU family members living and working in the UK?

Hello Dean,
Unfortunately, I don't have any family member in the UK.
Is there any chance that the university considers me EU student? And is there a possibility that I get a Student loan?

Regards, Angela.

Hello Angela,

Do you have a family member who's an EU national as detailed on those webpages?

The criteria is as follows:

Be a family member of an EU/UK National
- Spouse or civil partner
- Child, step child or adoptive child
- Parent, step parent or adoptive parent
- Grandparent or grandchild

Have lived in the EEA or Switzerland for the three years prior to the first day of the first AY of the course (Student family members must have held a valid residential status for any periods of residency in the UK)

Be living in the UK on the first day of the first term of their course.

Be attending a course which attracts funding.

We may be able to offer you the EU Tuition Fee Loan only if you meet this criteria. The university would need to answer your other question.

Regards, Dean.
