I'm in such a dilemma over accommodation ahhg
Trying to decide between liberty and Taly Court/gate
I like liberty because the rooms are apparently nicer and obviously it's closer to heath but it's amenities (kitchen, reception etc) aren't as nice for such a high price and it isn't as social
but Taly Court and gate are at least 20-30 minutes away from heath and could get really loud/distracting ??

Any input would be great please

I would definitely recommend Taly Court/gate because of the amenities close by lidl near court /Tesco, KFC, McDonald's near gate and like I've previously mentioned you're at Cathays 2 days a week for your anatomy so being at Taly is halfway between both campuses. The walk worries people but honestly when you get here you get so used to it and Cardiff is so walkable I it becomes the norm. There's also a great scheme called Next bike where there are bike stations dotted around where you can rent a home free for first 30 mins and very small charge after that

The first term covers some core anatomy and physiology - it does recap some A level content the aim of it is to make sure everyone is on the same foundation before you start case based learning. Honestly enjoy your year/summer will be one of the longest breaks you'll ever had you will feel well equipped by the end of first term
That’s good to know. Thanks x

yeah that makes sense, thank you!
Is it common/easy for medics staying at liberty or elsewhere to meet and socialise with people at Taly? Or are do they have fewer social opportunities because they live far away from the epicentre of first year?

Thank you. Also, I’ve been advised not to buy any textbooks before starting but just out of curiosity are there particular anatomy or physiology books you use in first year? Just in case I come across any dirt cheap copies in the next few months ... 😂

😂😂The advice you have been given is great there's no need to buy anything now it is much better to wait and see what they're like you can get things second hand when you arrive but I appreciate your keenness! 😉

"epicentre" love that 😂😂so yeah the medsoc put on social and balls for you to mix in the year. You will become closer to medics living in liberty but likely you'll make a lot of friends in Taly anyway so you'll find yourself being there a lot anyway! It's not the end of the world if you end up in liberty or uni halls but just Taly location is great

I think you have to firm Cardiff before you can book accommodation? Not sure if that is correct or not. Have you firmed Cardiff?

When should we be booking accommodation by? Is it first come first served so ASAP? Bit worried I’ll be left with a worse one because I can’t firm Cardiff until I’ve heard from my last 2 unis

As soon as you've heard from your unis you'll be fine you're not guaranteed first come first served but say if you put all the Taly as your top ones it's highly likely you'll get it

I would say Cardiff is very different to London so can be a bit of culture shock. There are different ethnicities in Cardiff but the proportions of each is not as well represented compared to London! Please dm me if you wanna chat a bit more about this

It's usual for most people to move into a house or other private accommodation for 2nd year onwards but there are usually a few places to apply for back in 1st year accommodation. There's also an option to apply for residence life team where you live in the freshers accomodation for free, put on events and provide support
