It comes from the presence of a strong acid catalyst (H3PO4 or H2SO4) as the acid dissociates it releases H ions

It states right above your pencil that concentrated sulfuric acid is used...

Yes I was thinking that. How does that work when aluminium oxide is used as the catalyst. Would the H+ ions be from the water BROski?!

Either can be used as a catalyst

In the case of the picture you showed, sulfuric acid is acting as the catalyst
