Pig and/or poultry farms

Hiya,

I need to do work experience on pig and poultry farms as part of my vet course but can't find any. I live in surrey, have relatives in sussex and yorkshire, so preferably in one of those counties but I am willing to travel elsewere if I need to. I'd appreciate any advice, or ideas on where to look - as yell.com seems to keep telling me there are no pig farms in the uk

Thanks

for pig looking into some of the agri collages would be good (reeseheath - i think they also offer accomodation during the holidays, harper adams etc), or maybe asking round at the vets you've been to for any clients they think may be of help, same for poultry really, good luck!

Doesn't your vet school have a list of contacts for students concerning work exp?

Farmers Weekly? Yellow Pages? Could try contacting your local large animal vet?

Reaseheath is really good for pig experience as they're used to students, and they let you do everything! They have accommodation on site and a canteen, and the people are really friendly, but book far ahead as they're really busy and they usually only take people during the holidays when the students aren't there.

Great tip Ive found... ask your local butchers! I had the same problem finding a pig place but the butchers will have contacts

arrgh! tell me about it!!! I live in epsom and ended up driving 35 mins to my pig placement each day for 14days - cost me £90 in petrol (and i've a tiny car which is great on fuel!) i couldn't find any others nearby-and they are fully booked with students for this summer!

as for chickens...let me know if you find any intensive chicken places - I'm still searching...can only find free range atm! which uni are you at btw?

PM me if you want details of a possible free range unit for chickens that i've found details for on the internet- where in surrey are you based?....not sure if they are still working though-did mine in southampton!

Hey - I'm guessing you can do it next summer too. There's a brill pig farm called 'Plantation Pigs' who said that they were offering work experience for next summer but not now. Google the name - they are based in surrey so location wise, it would be perfect for you. I'm doing my in Oxford on monday and it's called red lion farm

There's a poultry place up in Scotland, I think, that take vet students and give you accomadation too. I've had it on my favoruites list for about 3 years, waiting and waiting to use it for myself at some point, and it looks really good.

Just had another look round...they used to have a page dedicated to students, which I now can't find...hope they haven't stopped doing it...

Hai. I know this is kinda weird. I am first year accounting and finance undergraduate student currently studying in London. But I would like to know any opportunity to work for poultry company/farm especially for chicken because basically I am interested to know more in this field. I don't mind if they don't pay me as long as the opportunity is given. Many thanks !

I did my poultry placement through P.D. Hook (did mine in the Linconshire/Appleby area) and my pig placement at Waddingham Grange in Gainsborough.
