Ganglion Cyst

Has anyone else got one of these cysts? Mine just appeared randomly one day on my wrist and at first I couldn't feel anything but after a few weeks its started to really ache everytime I move my wrist :frown:. I went to the doctor and he said that the only way you can remove them is to basically hit it with a big hardback book or push it hard with your fingers and it will pop inside your skin!

Just wondering if anyone else has one and if you've ever tried removing it? The thoughts of removing this thing myself make me feel ill, especially if you hear it pop but its really aching everytime I move now.

My best friend had one and the doctor gave her cream for it and it went away. It came back a few months later though lol.

I had one on my wrist (or so the doctors thought) but it didn't go away for ages, so in the end they put me in for surgery. After the surgery, however, it turned out that it had been a benign tumour, which was something of a shock!

That makes me feel better that other people have them too haha. I've never even heard of it before or seen one so all my mates think I'm wierd lol.

Well thats why I thought I'd better have it checked out at the doctors, don't wanna be leaving lumps and bumps alone.

I had one, the doctor told it was nothing really to worry about, but if I really wanted to get rid of it the traditional cure was a big whack with the family Bible.

It went away on its own though, just woke up one day and it had obviously popped by its own accord.

Probably a few months, I can't remember exactly as it was over a year ago. It didn't really ache though... Was just kind of there for people to point out and get weirded out by!

One of my best friends from school had one too, for months. Her doctor said pretty much the same as yours OP - 'bash it with a holy Bible or leave it alone!' :p: Although they do look pretty gross, at least they're harmless. We became quite fond of hers eventually - even drawing faces on it and making it wiggle up and down like it was talking.

Okay..we were really sad children. Sorry.

hey i had exactly the same thing (hence the username lol)! I think mine was caused by writing lol... anyways it should go down after a while, mine has. If its causing you a lot of bother (or gets bigger), I'm sure you can get it surgically removed but try and wait it out to see if it goes down.

odd question:
Can you move these around under the skin?

To some extent - just backwards and forwards. They won't go up your arm or anything.

My aunt has one. She said it ached when it first came up and then just felt normal, but she had it removed anyway. But when it was gone she said her wrist hurt every time she moved it, and as soon as it came back (about two weeks later) the pain went, so she never bothered having it taken away again.

Yey glad to know I'm not alone . I still hate it though, I can't even lean on my hand because it just aches so much. I think if I have a few drinks sometime and feel brave I'll get someone to hit it. The doctor told me it wouldn't actually hurt.. although I think thats a lie lol.

Theres a disgusting video on youtube of a man who pierces the skin with a needle and squeezes the ganglion out, it comes out like a clear thick goo. You have to be over 18 to watch the video so I thought I'd better not post a link.

I've got one on my finger that i've had for over 10 years. The doctor told me that 'whack it with a bible' JOKE too. At least i think it was a joke. He laughed, but he's a very strange man..

Anyway.. i was told the options were:

Steroid injections, which are painful and only have a 40% chance of getting rid of it. And even if it does get rid of it - it will probably come back.

Or an operation. And it still might come back after that.

So, i just left it. It's only smalll so doesn't bother me that much. If your does; go and see a different doctor and ask what they can do for you.

I've got one on my wrist! It first appeared about 7 years ago, sorry to say.

I've grown used to it though - I don't put much weight on the wrist and in return it doesn't bother me. I've had it squeezed, poked with needles to drain it etc (which helped temporarily - my doctor put two pins through under local anaeshetic), but the only real option for removal is surgery.

I was advised against it by a dermatologist since the scar tissue will likely cause pain/weakness, maybe more than I have now, and of course it COULD still come back...

Mine's really quite hard now. It was softer and more painful back in the day and I used to really struggle but like I said, I've just grown used to it. And it's only visible if I bend my wrist so it's not that unsightly.

I've got one that appeared on my finger the other week, it ached at first but it seems alright now, just a bit annoying! And i've had a small one on my wrist for about 10 years or more but its hardly noticable and has never caused any problems
