identify the link between the number of outer shell (valence) electrons, the number of shells, and the position of an element on the periodic table in groups 1-8(0).

The group number in the periodic table represents the number of outer shell electrons and the period number is how many shells the element has. So for example, chlorine is in group 7 and period 3 so it has 7 electrons on the outer shell and 3 shells
